St. Patrick’s High School – Iten is a national boys’ boarding school located in Iten, Elgeyo Marakwet County.
The school was founded on February 1, 1961, through a collaboration between the Patrician Brothers of Ireland, the Catholic Church, and local leaders led by the late William Murgor, who was then the area chief. The school welcomed its first cohort of 30 students that same year.
What began with just four classrooms on a modest parcel of land has grown into a thriving institution with 20 classrooms spread across 100 acres.
The school community acknowledges the pivotal role played by the late former President Daniel T. Arap Moi in facilitating the land expansion.
St. Patrick’s-Iten
From the 1960s to the 1980s, SPHS–Iten was a national academic powerhouse, especially in A-level examinations.
Although academic performance dipped in the 1990s, the school remained in Kenya’s top 100 secondary schools.
Beyond academics, St. Patrick’s is renowned for sporting excellence, boasting a decorated history in hockey, volleyball, basketball, and especially athletics.
The school was the national hockey champion in 1985, 1988, and 1990, and dominated volleyball, winning the national title 17 times, including an incredible 15-year streak from 1970 to 1984.
It also clinched multiple basketball titles in the former Rift Valley Province. In athletics, the national school has left an indelible mark, producing world-class Olympians and global champions.
Over 300 students are admitted to St. Patrick’s based on academic merit and individual choice, in line with Kenya’s education policy.
Performance
Until 2023, admissions were based on performance in the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examination.

Over the years, St. Patrick’s High School – Iten has consistently upheld a strong academic record and remarkable achievements in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE).
In the 2024 KCSE, the school had 352 candidates, with more than 88% achieving the minimum university entry grade under full government sponsorship.
