A major security breach occurred at Shannon Airport in Ireland when a man entered a restricted area and climbed onto the wing of a United States Air Force C‑130 Hercules military transport aircraft.
The individual allegedly attacked the fuselage during the Saturday, April 11, morning attack with a hatchet before being detained by authorities.
The alarm was raised at approximately 9:45 a.m. when airport staff observed a man inside a restricted zone near a remote taxiway. A U.S. Air Force C‑130 Hercules aircraft was parked away from the main terminal.
Witnesses reported the man climbed onto the wing and struck the fuselage with a tool believed to be a hatchet. Sources indicated the damage to the aircraft was extensive. Mobile stairs were deployed to allow officers to reach the man, who was then arrested.
Gardaí confirmed the suspect, a man in his 40s, was taken into custody shortly before 11:00 a.m. He is being held under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at a Garda station in the Clare‑Tipperary division.
Security response
Earlier reports indicated that Airport Police, Shannon Airport’s fire and rescue service, Gardaí, and members of the Defense Forces stationed at the airport responded immediately.
Additional uniformed Gardaí, armed detectives, and members of the Garda Armed Support Unit were also dispatched.
A Garda spokesperson said investigations are ongoing to determine how the man gained access to the restricted area. The Airport Police conducted perimeter patrols to identify the point of breach.

Shannon Airport suspended operations at 9:50 a.m. following the incident. Two departing flights were delayed, while an arriving aircraft from Lourdes was placed in a holding pattern after air traffic controllers advised the crew of the security breach. The aircraft was cleared to land at 10:22 a.m.
A spokesperson for The Shannon Airport Group confirmed operations resumed at 10:15 a.m. “The airport suspended operations at approximately 9:50 a.m. and resumed operations at 10:15 a.m.,” the spokesperson said.
Previous Shannon Airport security breaches
Saturday’s incident is the latest in a series of breaches at Shannon Airport. In November, three people were arrested after a van entered a restricted area. The vehicle was intercepted by Gardaí and Defense Forces personnel.
On May 1 last year, another van crashed through a security fence, forcing the airport to close temporarily. Three people were detained after exiting the vehicle onto a taxiway when it became stuck in a ditch.
Two weeks later, a Garda officer was hospitalized following yet another breach. Three women were arrested after allegedly gaining access to the airside area and causing damage to an aircraft.

Authorities are now examining how the latest suspect managed to bypass security measures. The incident has raised renewed concerns about vulnerabilities at Shannon Airport, which regularly hosts U.S. military aircraft.
The Garda spokesperson confirmed: “An adult male entered an unauthorised area of Shannon Airport, Shannon, Co. Clare. He was arrested for alleged criminal damage and is currently detained. Investigations are ongoing.”
Airport Police are working with Gardaí to review surveillance footage and perimeter security. The Defense Forces, who maintain a presence at the airport, also assisted in the response.
