Modern Coast Express is one of the largest bus and logistics companies operating in East Africa.
The company provides passenger transport and parcel delivery services in Kenya and across several countries in the region, including Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, South Sudan, Burundi, and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
It is among the most recognized transport brands in the region due to its extensive route network and cross-border operations.
Modern Coast History and Ownership
Modern Coast Express was founded by the late Mombasa businessman Shahid Pervez Butt, who built the company into one of East Africa’s leading transport and logistics firms before his death in 2014.
At the time of his death, his business empire was estimated at about KSh 5 billion and included Modern Coast Express, Modern Coast Courier, Vantage Road Transporters and several property companies.
The company was founded in Mombasa and started operations with six Scania buses.
It expanded steadily over the years and grew into a regional transport operator with more than 60 coaches.
Modern Coast established branches in major towns and cities to support passenger travel, parcel transportation, and customer service.

The company has maintained its headquarters in Mombasa while expanding its presence across East Africa.
Routes and Passenger Services
Passenger transport remains the company’s main business. Modern Coast operates local and international routes connecting major cities, towns and border points.
In Kenya, the company serves destinations including Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Eldoret, Nakuru, Busia, Malaba, Homa Bay and Usenge.
The services are used by workers, traders, students, tourists, and businesspeople traveling across the country.
The company has built a strong position in regional travel through its international routes. Its buses connect Nairobi with Kampala in Uganda, Kigali in Rwanda, Juba in South Sudan and Dar es Salaam in Tanzania.
Other services connect Mombasa with Dar es Salaam and with Kampala via Nairobi.
These routes support the movement of passengers across East Africa and reduce the need for travelers to change buses at national borders.
Modern Coast offers different travel categories depending on the route and coach. Available options include standard, business, and VIP services.
The company markets its buses as long-distance coaches equipped with features designed to improve passenger comfort.
Some buses are fitted with air-conditioning systems, reclining seats, additional legroom, charging points, and Wi-Fi.
The company has also promoted itself as one of the luxury coach operators in East Africa.
Parcel Services and Digital Operations
Apart from passenger services, the company operates a parcel and courier division.
Customers use the service to transport goods, business consignments, documents, and personal packages between towns and cities served by the company’s buses.
The parcel business has become an important part of the company’s operations because it uses the same transport network that carries passengers.
Parcels can be dispatched and collected through the company’s branch offices across the region.

Technology has become an important part of Modern Coast’s operations.
The company provides online ticket booking through its website and digital platforms.
Customers can search routes, select travel dates, reserve seats, and make payments before reporting for travel.
Digital booking has reduced dependence on physical ticket offices and made travel planning easier for passengers traveling within and outside Kenya.
Branch Network and Challenges
Modern Coast has built an extensive branch network to support its transport and logistics business.
Information published by the company indicates that it has operated dozens of branches across Kenya and additional offices in Uganda, Tanzania and Rwanda.
These branches handle ticketing, parcel collection, parcel dispatch and customer support.
The network allows the company to maintain services in both major cities and smaller urban centers.
Like many long-distance transport operators, Modern Coast has faced challenges.
The company has been involved in several road accidents over the years, leading to investigations by transport authorities and increased public attention on road safety standards.
Such incidents have generated discussions about driver management, vehicle inspection, passenger safety, and compliance with transport regulations.
These issues are common concerns within the wider public transport sector across East Africa.
