Latema SACCO, also known as Latema Travels, is a public transport cooperative operating matatus and buses in Nairobi and its surrounding areas.
The SACCO is among registered public service vehicle operators working within Kenya’s transport regulatory framework, which requires matatu operators to belong to licensed SACCOs or transport companies.
The SACCO is involved in the transport of passengers and parcels and has maintained operations on several urban and peri-urban routes linking Nairobi’s Central Business District to residential and commercial centers.
Latema SACCO Route Network
Latema SACCO operates on routes connecting Nairobi CBD with Kabiria, Thika, Gachie, Westlands and Kikuyu. These corridors serve commuters traveling between the city center and residential areas in Nairobi and neighboring settlements.
Its operations are supported by stages located at key transport points, including Latema Road, Kabiria Stage and the Kikuyu Stage on Tom Mboya Street in Nairobi.

The Tom Mboya Street stage also serves as a collection point for the SACCO’s parcel services.
The routes place the SACCO among operators serving some of the busiest commuter corridors in the city, particularly those linking the central business district with western and northern Nairobi suburbs.
Parcel Delivery and Passenger Transport Services
Passenger transport remains the SACCO’s main business. It operates a fleet of matatus and buses providing daily transport services on its designated routes.
Like many transport cooperatives, Latema manages vehicle operations through a structured SACCO system that brings together vehicle owners under a common management framework.
This model is used across Kenya’s matatu industry to support route management, regulatory compliance and operational coordination.
In addition to passenger transport, Latema SACCO operates parcel delivery services.
The service allows customers to send packages through the SACCO’s transport network for collection at designated destinations served by its vehicles.
Latema SACCO identifies the parcel office at the Kikuyu Stage opposite the former Tuskys premises on Tom Mboya Street.
The parcel business forms part of the wider transport services offered by the SACCO and is common among operators that maintain regular schedules on commuter routes.
Latema SACCO has pursued fleet growth through partnerships with financial institutions.

Public reports indicate collaboration with Kingdom Bank on vehicle financing arrangements to expand and renew the SACCO’s fleet.
One financing programme involved support for the acquisition of 50 vehicles.
The financing initiative forms part of efforts to increase transport capacity and support continued operations on the SACCO’s routes.
Introduction of Electric Buses
A major recent development at Latema SACCO has been the adoption of electric buses.
The SACCO partnered with electric bus provider BasiGo to introduce four electric buses into its fleet.
The vehicles were deployed on the Nairobi CBD-Thika, Nairobi CBD-Kabiria and Nairobi CBD-Gachie routes.
The partnership placed Latema among Nairobi transport operators participating in the rollout of electric public transport vehicles.
The buses were introduced as part of efforts to reduce reliance on diesel-powered vehicles and support the transition towards electric mobility in Kenya’s transport sector.
Like many operators in Nairobi’s public transport sector, Latema SACCO has faced operational challenges related to road safety and competition.
In 2025, one of its buses was involved in an accident in the Waruku-Gatina area, injuring dozens of passengers.
The SACCO also operates in a competitive environment where multiple operators serve similar routes across Nairobi and its outskirts.
Competition among SACCOs typically focuses on passenger volumes, route access, fares, and fleet deployment.
Latema SACCO has also maintained an active presence on social media platforms, where it publishes service updates, announcements and operational information for passengers.
The cooperative has used these platforms to communicate route information, fleet developments, customer notices, and partnership announcements involving transport services.
