Felix Orinda, popularly known as DJ Evolve has broken his silence following a near-death incident which left him battling for his life five years ago after he was shot in a Nairobi club.
DJ Evolve, whose life changed drastically following the incident, showed great improvement during an interview with Citizen TV where he shared his journey after the tragic shooting.
The DJ spoke about his painful journey after the shooting, noting that he lost his voice at some point, and added weight.
Reflecting on his journey, Orinda mentioned that he has had to learn life again which has helped him discover new things about himself that he wasn’t aware of before and learn new things such as coding.
DJ Evolve while sharing on what a typical day for him entails said that he has been reading and studying coding courses.
“I’ve been learning yeah; you have to learn life again lots of things, but it’s been a good experience as well. I got to find out more about myself, how resilient I am how strong I am. I’ve been reading, studying new courses like IT. You know right now most things can be done remotely so I’ve been into coding in the recent past couple of months yeah so that’s what I’ve been doing,” he said.
“I have also been thinking of concepts to execute while I’m still here. You know Deejaying is like riding a bike when you get it, and you get it properly that’s it.”
He added that his interests are still in music even though he has developed other interests, adding that he is working on how to integrate them into what he was doing before.
DJ Evolve shares recovery journey
The DJ further shared his biggest wins during his recovery journey, saying that it has seen him being able to take food by himself again.
He also revealed that he has been able to regain his voice after he woke up one day and found himself not able to speak.

DJ Evolve noted that being able to speak was one of his biggest wins in his recovery process, describing the time he was unable to speak as challenging.
In addition, he said that he has been able to regain most of his upper limb movements.
“I started feeding again after some time I got my voice back recently. I stopped speaking while I was in hospital I just woke up one day and found myself whispering. You know when you’re in a position where you can’t do anything you can’t communicate what you want to be done, and it just comes with so many things so getting my voice back was one of the biggest wins,” said the DJ.
DJ Evolve, at the same time, shared his lowest moments adding that he initially carried a baggage before he decided to forgive for everything he had gone through.

Before making peace with his new life, the DJ said that he always thought of his past life before the shooting, what his life would be if it had not happened and what it was after the incident.
Forgiveness
He had to make a decision and embrace what had happened as thinking about the events would throw him into depression.
“I figured out all these things even as much as I ask myself all these questions, as long as there’s no solution at this moment, I will keep bugging myself with those questions and I will end up depressed yeah,” he added.
“So, when I decided to embrace what has happened and figure out solutions from where I’m at I started feeling alive again.”
He also noted that his strength has come from God and forgiveness, highlighting that this is what has taken him through most of the hurdles that he has faced in this journey.
In terms of his medical routine, he said that he has his physio or my family members who help him do stretches, standing aids, and sitting exercises.
He said that he couldn’t sit before but has since been trained to getting back his core strength, and that his hands are slightly regaining function.
“They also trained me to strengthen my diaphragm so that I can be able to breathe well as well yeah and then now my hands we’ve been working on them they’re slightly regaining some function and now I’m regaining some sensation on my feet as well. I can recognize pain when I have it which is a plus for me,” he said.
Babu Owino acquitted
Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino was in August 2023 cleared of charges in the DJ Evolve shooting incident.
In the ruling, Milimani’s Senior Principal Magistrate, Bernard Ochoi, asserted that the prosecution had not managed to substantiate the accusations.
The case revolved around allegations of firearm misuse and disorderly conduct, ultimately resulting in Babu Owino’s acquittal. Owino has been paying for DJEvolve’s medical and physiotherapy bills.
