Biography
Lady Justice Susan Njoki Ndung’u is a Judge of the Supreme Court of Kenya, a position she has been holding since June 2011.
She is also an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya. Currently, the Lady Justice heads the Supreme Court governance and regulatory affairs portfolio.
This portfolio focuses on the effective governance of the Supreme Court to ensure consistency and predictability in the management of the Court.
To achieve a well-developed and effective governance structure there is a need to include a set of rules and responsibilities for individuals as well as directions and strategies for the management of the court.
The main focus of the portfolio is to develop, review, amend or update the Supreme Court rules, regulations and directions and liaison with other government institutions.
Educational Background and Career
Njoki Ndung’u holds a Law degree from the University of Nairobi and a Master in Law Degree (LLM) in Human Rights and Civil Liberties from the University of Leicester, England.
She also holds a Diploma in Women’s Rights from the World University Services, Austria.

Before rising to become a Supreme Court judge, the Lady Justice previously worked as State Counsel in the Office of the Attorney General between 1989 and 1993 where she began her career.
Ndung’u later worked as a Program Officer at the Institute for Education in Democracy, a National Protection Officer at the United Nations High Commission for Refugees and a Political Analyst in Conflict Management at the African Union.
Lady Justice Ndung’u is a former Member of the Pan-African Parliament and also a member of the 9th Parliament of the Republic of Kenya, where she sat in the Standing Committees on Defense and Foreign Affairs, Administration of Justice and Legal Affairs, and the Parliamentary Select Committee on the Constitution.
She is the architect of the Sexual Offences Act 2006 and of the amendments to the Employment Act 2007 providing for paid maternity and paternity leave as well as to the Political Parties Act 2007 on affirmative action measures for women in political participation.
Lady Justice Njoki Ndung’u sat as a member of the Committee of Experts that drafted the Kenyan Constitution and has received international and national recognition for her work.
Awards
She was awarded the UN Person of the Year in Kenya 2006 and the International Commission of Jurists – Jurist of the Year Award 2006.
Further, she received the Presidential Commendation of the rank of the Elder of the Burning Spear (EBS) in 2006 and was later awarded the rank of Chief of the Burning Spear (CBS).
