The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced a four-month closure of a section of the Mwingi–Ukasi (A3) Road to facilitate construction works.
In a public notice shared on July 25, 2025, the agency stated that the Mwingi–Ukasi (A3) Road will be fully closed at KM 39+400 (Kwa-Vii) from Monday, July 28, 2025, to Wednesday, November 12, 2025.
“This is to allow for the construction of a box culvert, and motorists are therefore advised to use the designated diversion as indicated in the diversion plan,” said KeNHA Acting Director General Eng. Luka Kimeli.
The closure is aimed at enabling safe and efficient construction of drainage infrastructure along the corridor, which serves as a key transport link within Kitui County and beyond.
The affected area is located along the Mwingi–Ukasi section of the A3 Road, which forms part of a major 507-kilometre highway stretching from Thika to Liboi, near the Kenya–Somalia border.
Traffic management plan
To mitigate the impact of the closure, KeNHA has outlined a detailed traffic management plan that includes marked diversions for both Mwingi-bound and Ukasi-bound traffic.
Motorists have been urged to follow signage and instructions from traffic marshals and police officers who will be stationed around the work zone throughout the construction period.

“KeNHA advises motorists to exercise caution around the work areas, follow the proposed traffic management plan, and cooperate with the traffic marshals on site,” the authority noted in its advisory.
A map shared in the official notice showed the working area and the two main diversion paths labelled “Diversion to Ukasi” and “Diversion to Mwingi.”
The authority has pledged to minimise inconvenience by fast-tracking the works and maintaining safe passage for vehicles during the rehabilitation period.
“These works are necessary for improved road safety and infrastructure resilience,” the notice added.

KeNHA apologised for the inconvenience and urged the public to remain patient as the works are necessary for improved road safety and infrastructure resilience.
Mwingi–Ukasi (A3) Road
The A3 road, managed by the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), stretches approximately 507 km from Thika eastwards through Mwingi, Garissa, Dadaab, and terminates at Liboi, near the Somali border.
The segment between Mwingi and Ukasi lies within Kitui County, a vital rural corridor serving eastern Kenya communities like Ukasi, Kitui, and Garissa.
