The National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) has closed Ahadi Rehabilitation Facility in Githunguri, Kiambu County, due to severe health and safety violations.
On May 27, 2025, NACADA conducted an unannounced inspection at the Rehabilitation Center. Photos captured indicated the center was in a deplorable state described as inhumane.
NACADA stated that the specific issues included lack of proper medical attention and qualified staff with no medical or counseling professionals on site.
The living quarters had been neglected and was characterized by poor hygiene and inadequate facilities at the facility.
In addition, the kitchen was also below standards and were extremely unsanitary, as well as the toilets which were filthy and posed significant health risks to the residents.

NACADA found the institution wanting of basic health and safety regulations which it deemed essential for rehabilitation centers.
“This isn’t just substandard, it’s criminal exploitation of vulnerable Kenyans,” declared NACADA’s CEO, Dr. Anthony Omerikwa, during the operation.
“We will not tolerate these so-called rehabilitation centres that operate as human warehouses rather than places of healing. Effective immediately, we’re launching nationwide inspections to root out every illegal facility preying on desperate families.”
NACADA rescues victims
Following the closure, NACADA ensured the safe transfer of all clients to approved and accredited rehabilitation facilities.
Families were notified and provided assistance to relocate their loved ones, ensuring continuity of care. This measure was critical to prevent disruption in the treatment process for those affected.
Dr. Omerikwa revealed that out of 255 facilities inspected by NACADA, only 139 are accredited, serving an estimated 3.2 million people with substance use disorders.
Their reports also show that that 1 in 4 private rehabilitation centers operate illegally, highlighting the scale of the problem.
Earlier in the beginning of the crackdown in January, NACADA warned of potential closures and legal actions against non-compliant facilities.
To empower the public and enhance safety, NACADA has encouraged citizens to verify the licenses of rehabilitation centers using their toll-free line, 1192.

This initiative aims to prevent vulnerable individuals from being exploited by illegal facilities and ensure they receive care in accredited environments.
Moreover, the shutdown of Ahadi Rehabilitation Center serves as a stark reminder of the challenges in regulating the rehabilitation sector in Kenya.
