Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) officially began its transition to a fully automated healthcare environment with the launch of the Afya Apex HMIS/ERP system under the Taifa Care programme.
In a statement on March 17, the hospital noted that the system is scheduled to go live on March 20, 2026, and is designed to transform the delivery of services across the country’s largest referral hospital.

KNH Leads Hospital Digitisation Drive Under Taifa Care
According to the hospital, the launch, led by the acting Chief Executive Officer, Richard Lesiyampe, and Anthony Lenayara of Kenya’s Digital Health Agency (DHA), included a successful pilot demonstration conducted in Machakos, confirming the system’s readiness for deployment at KNH.
Once operational, the Afya Apex system will digitize critical hospital functions across the patient care journey. These include accident and emergency services, triage, patient registration, radiology, laboratory services, and pharmacy operations.

The system will improve efficiency, reduce errors, and enhance the overall quality of patient care through real-time data access and integrated workflows.
To support implementation, KNH has received 1,286 tablets, each equipped with a power bank, to facilitate mobility and uninterrupted use across departments.
The hospital will also benefit from 10 years of free internet connectivity, ensuring stable and continuous system access to support clinical and administrative operations.

Staff training is currently underway to prepare healthcare workers and administrative personnel for the transition. KNH said the training programme is focused on ensuring smooth adoption of the system and minimizing disruption to service delivery during the changeover period.
Additionally, the hospital aims to achieve a fully paperless operation once the system is fully embedded. Plans are also in place to scale the Afya Apex HMIS/ERP system to Level 5 and Level 6 hospitals across the country, supporting wider health sector reforms under Taifa Care.

How Afya Apex Will Work
The Afya Apex system, under the Taifa Care programme, is designed to help hospitals work faster, smarter, and more smoothly for both patients and health workers.
Instead of relying on paper files that can get lost or take time to move between departments, the system stores patient information digitally and makes it instantly available wherever it is needed in the hospital.
From the moment a patient arrives for registration, their details, test requests, results, prescriptions, and billing information are captured in one connected system. This means shorter queues, fewer repeat questions, quicker access to lab and radiology results, and more accurate medication dispensing.
For doctors and nurses, it reduces paperwork and allows them to focus more on patient care. For patients, it means clearer records, faster service, and fewer delays.
The system is expected to support a fully paperless hospital environment and lay the foundation for rolling out similar digital services to other high‑level hospitals.
