Mombasa is among the counties with the highest number of SHA-approved facilities, with centres ranging from public referral and sub-county hospitals to private institutions, maternity centers, nursing homes, eye hospitals, and cancer centers.
According to SHA, health facilities in Mombasa that are formally licensed by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) and included in the authority’s authorized provider list are SHA-approved.
During a health sector visit to Mombasa, Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Health, Aden Duale said the county was leading nationally in SHA registration.
Duale noted that during his January 29, 2026, visit, about 58% of the target population had enrolled in the healthcare system.
“Mombasa continues to lead nationally in Social Health Authority (SHA) registration, with over 695,000 residents enrolled, about 58% of the target population, demonstrating effective county leadership and strong collaboration with the National Government in advancing Universal Health Coverage (UHC),” CS Aden Duale stated.
SHA-Approved Public Hospitals in Mombasa
Several government-managed facilities providing Level 4 and Level 5 healthcare services within Mombasa County are listed in the directory, qualifying the healthcare providers to offer the healthcare insurance coverage.
Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital (CGTRH), designated a Level 5 facility, is one of the main referral centers in the Coastal region.
The level 5 referral provides specialized treatment, emergency care, and surgery, as well as referrals from lower-level hospitals.
Further, level 4-approved facilities include Port-Reitz Sub-County Hospital, Tudor Sub-County Hospital, Likoni Sub-County Hospital, and the Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital in Utange.
According to SHA, the approved public hospitals at levels 4 and 5 provide outpatient and inpatient care, maternity services, emergency treatment, and specialized clinics serving residents across the county.
In addition, the directory recognizes Mrima Health Center as a specialized Level 4B facility.

SHA lists several Level 3B healthcare facilities in Mombasa County recognized as approved service providers that provide outpatient treatment, maternity care, community healthcare services, mental health treatment, and cancer-related care.
According to the SHA directory, the approved level 3B facilities include Tudor Health Care Ltd, Nyali Bridge Mombasa Hospital Ltd, Buxton Hospital Mombasa, Salaam Hospital, Nairobi Women’s Hospital, Mombasa Cancer Center, Chiromo Mental Health Hospital Limited at Nyali, and Ace Northern Hospital Ltd.
