Mombasa County has announced 3,000 casual job opportunities for youth, women, and persons with disabilities under a program aimed at flood prevention, drainage restoration, and environmental management.

In a public notice on September 16, the Mombasa County Public Service Board advertised the vacancies under the Mombasa Yangu Program, which seeks to improve the county’s response to flooding and environmental challenges while creating short-term employment opportunities for residents.

According to the advert, the successful applicants will be engaged on a temporary basis for three months and will be deployed in phases depending on operational requirements.

The county government said 1,500 positions have been allocated to the transport department while another 1,500 positions will be under the environment department, bringing the total number of available jobs to 3,000.

Mombasa County Public Service Board invited applications from suitably qualified and competent youth, women and persons living with disabilities, saying the recruitment forms part of efforts to strengthen flood control and environmental conservation initiatives across the county.

In recent years, the county has grappled with flooding, particularly during heavy rains, with several areas experiencing disruptions caused by blocked drainage systems and poor waste management.

Residents selected for the program will support efforts to restore drainage channels, improve environmental cleanliness, and enhance flood mitigation measures in different parts of the county.

How to Apply

Interested candidates have been directed to submit their applications through the Mombasa County Public Service Board recruitment portal.

Applicants must provide a curriculum vitae, certified copies of academic and professional certificates, and copies of national identity cards or passports, along with any other relevant supporting documents.

The county said applicants must submit applications by September 22, 2026.

The notice further stated that the county government is an equal opportunity employer and encouraged youth, women, persons living with disabilities, marginalized groups, and minority communities to apply.

The Public Service Board further warned that canvassing will lead to automatic disqualification and emphasized that it does not charge any fee or use agents during the recruitment process.

Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted and must present original identification and academic documents during the verification process.

Mombasa County Flood Challenge

Mombasa continues to grapple with recurrent flooding, which experts attribute to a combination of low-lying coastal terrain, rapid urbanization, inadequate drainage infrastructure, poor solid waste management and the growing effects of climate change.

According to a 2024 Flood Risk Assessment of Mombasa County, Kenya, prepared under the Covenant of Mayors for Sub-Saharan Africa (CoM SSA) and the Mombasa City Lab initiative, about 43.3 percent of Mombasa County falls within high and very high flood hazard zones.

The study identified wards such as Likoni, Chaani, Junda, Kongowea, Magongo, Mikindani and Timbwani among the areas most vulnerable to flooding.

The assessment showed that 29.9 percent of Mombasa is classified as high-risk, while 13.4 percent falls under a very high flood hazard.

Mombasa’s vulnerability to flooding has been linked to unchecked urban growth, encroachment on wetlands and natural waterways, and drainage systems that are often overwhelmed during heavy rainfall events.

Climate-related threats are also increasing pressure on the county.

A Climate and Development Knowledge Network (CDKN) assessment found that a 0.3-meter rise in sea level could submerge about 17 percent of Mombasa’s land area.

In October 2006, severe flooding affected an estimated 60,000 people and caused widespread damage to homes, businesses and infrastructure across the county.

More recently, in 2025, floods and heavy rains disrupted transport, healthcare and public services in several parts of the county.
