Football star McDonald Mariga has failed in his second bid to become Kibra constituency’s Member of Parliament.
Mariga lost to Peter Orero
He was contesting on United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket while Orero was the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) candidate .
Orero was declared winner after he garnered 33,008 votes.
Mariga came second with 20,049 votes
Incumbent MP Imran Okoth managed 18,901 votes. He ran on an independent ticket.
Mariga had his first bid at the Kibra seat in the 2019 by-election following the death of then MP Ken Okoth
In the by-election, Mariga ran on a jubilee party ticket
He was heavily supported by Deputy President William Ruto but lost to Imran Okoth
In the by-election Imran garnered 24,636 votes against Mariga’s 11,230 votes
Azimio leader Raila Odinga had prevailed upon Imran to withdraw from this year’s contest in favour of Orero
Imran however turned down the request
He had initially lost to Orero during the ODM party primaries before he decided to run as an independent
Raila had expressed fears that having two candidates from the Azimio collation would have compromised ODM’s c hances of defending the seat.
Kibra has for a long time been Raila’s strongest support base in Nairobi
