From topping her KCSE exams in 2006 to leading Glovo Kenya as Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Caroline Mutuku’s journey has been nothing short of success.
Raised in a family of teachers, Caroline had no choice but to push herself to excel in her academic journey.
Normally, in Kenya, A-grade students choose the most prestigious courses such as Engineering, Medicine, and Actuarial Science.
Mutuku was no exception. With such outstanding grades, she enrolled in medical school at an Asian institution. But she soon realized that she was not meant for the hospital corridors.
Determined to grow in a different direction, she began developing her leadership skills in the business world.
She joined the University of Nairobi in 2009 and completed a Bachelor of Commerce degree in Operations Management in 2012.
During her time there, she served as Secretary General of the Operations Management Students Association (OMSA), demonstrating early leadership alongside academic excellence.
Caroline also pursued the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) qualification at Strathmore University between 2009 and 2011.
In December 2011, she was awarded the Chartered Accountant certification under ACCA.
Caroline Mutuku Career Background
Since November 2022, Caroline Mutuku has served as the Country Managing Director of Glovo in Kenya.
In a short period, she has grown the business threefold, making it a medium-sized market and the most consistent over the past three years.
But her career journey began after she finished the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination.
At just 18, fresh out of high school, she joined Equity Bank, gaining hands-on experience in finance and client management.
In 2021, Caroline sought new challenges beyond banking. She joined Swvl, the app-based bus service operating across Nairobi, taking on a leadership role in an entirely different sector.
Within five months, she helped transform the business, tripling topline growth and moving Nairobi from the fifth to the second-largest retail market by GMV, all while improving margins.
