Ernest Kivai Ogesi Kagesi began his education at Gilwatsi Primary School in 1964, where he earned his Certificate of Primary Education (CPE) certificate and graduated in 1970.
He then attended Ruiru High School in 1972 and graduated in 1974, earning his East African Certificate of Education Examination (EACE).

He rose to Audit Senior between 1983 and 1986, after which he served as Audit Manager at Githongo & Company CPAs until 1991.
Returning to Kenya, he joined Mumias Sugar Company, managing accounts as Management Accountant from 1991 to 1996, then heading the treasury department until 2007.
Between 2007 and 2017, he transitioned into business, serving as Director at Kagesi Enterprises Limited.
Political career
In 2017, Ernest Kivai entered politics as a Member of Parliament for Vihiga Constituency, a position he has held since then.
In Parliament, Kagesi has been an active member of the Departmental Committee on Defence and Foreign Relations and currently chairs the Public Petitions Committee.
