Early Life & Education
Peter Lochakapong was born and raised in West Pokot County, beginning his formal education in 1977 at Ngoleyo Primary School, where he studied until 1983, completing the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education.
In 1984, he enrolled at Ortum Secondary School, one of the county’s oldest institutions, and studied there until 1987, sitting the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education.
He then pursued advanced-level studies at St. Peters Mumias High School between 1988 and 1989, where he earned the Kenya Advanced Certificate of Education.
His strong academic record won him admission to Kenyatta University in 1990, where he pursued a Bachelor of Education in Sciences.
He graduated in 1994 and soon joined the national teaching service and returned to Kenyatta University and completed a Master of Education between 2012 and 2016.
Career
Professional Career
After graduating in 1994, he was recruited by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) and posted to schools in West Pokot.
For close to two decades, he served as a classroom teacher, subject head, and later school administrator.
He became known for his commitment to discipline, academic excellence, and mentorship, especially in rural schools where he often worked with limited resources.
By the mid-2000s, he had risen to leadership roles in school administration, where he focused on teacher development and community engagement.

Throughout this period, he also became an advocate for expanding access to education in pastoralist communities, where cultural practices, poverty, and insecurity often combined to deny children consistent schooling.
Political career
Peter Lochakapong made the transition from classroom to politics in 2017, when he contested the parliamentary seat for Sigor Constituency in West Pokot County and successfully won it.
During his first term, he was appointed to the Departmental Committee on Education and Research, where his background made him a credible and active participant in oversight of education policy.
He championed issues of teacher deployment, bursary funding for needy students, and expansion of learning infrastructure in arid and semi-arid counties.
He was also later placed on the Finance and Planning Committee, giving him a voice in national budgetary allocations, particularly in the context of pushing for more equitable distribution of resources to marginalized regions like West Pokot.
In the 2022 general election, Lochakapong successfully defended his seat, this time under the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), part of the Kenya Kwanza coalition.
In parliamentary debates and public forums, he has raised concerns over the evolution of cattle rustling from a cultural practice into a commercialized criminal enterprise, warning of its destabilizing impact on livelihoods.
He has also taken part in deliberations on drought preparedness and water projects, urging the government to accelerate investments in water harvesting, irrigation, and livestock management to cushion households from recurring climate shocks.
In Sigor, he is particularly associated with transparent bursary allocations, improvement of school facilities, and investment in small infrastructure projects that directly benefit rural communities.
