Pius Mwendwa is a finance professional currently serving as the Acting Managing Director of the Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC).
He was appointed on April 3 following a resolution by the KPC Board to ensure continuity of operations after the arrest of the substantive Managing Director, Joe Sang.
According to a statement issued by KPC Board Chairperson Faith Boinett, the Board assured stakeholders that the company continues to operate smoothly and without disruption under Mwendwa’s interim leadership.
The Board reiterated its commitment to maintaining stability at the state corporation during the ongoing investigations.
“We wish to assure our stakeholders, our shareholders, and the public that KPC’s operations remain stable and unaffected. To ensure business continuity in the intervening period, Mr. Pius Mwendwa will discharge the duties of the office of the Managing Director,” the Board stated.
Education and Professional Qualifications
Pius Mwendwa has a strong academic and professional foundation in finance and accounting.
Mwendwa holds a Master of Commerce in Finance from Strathmore University (completed between 2012 and 2014) and a Bachelor of Commerce in Finance from the Catholic University of Eastern Africa.

He is a Certified Public Accountant of Kenya (CPA‑K) and a member of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya (ICPAK).
Pius’ professional competencies include International Financial Reporting Standards, auditing and assurance, financial and management accounting, and corporate finance and strategic planning.
Career Background
Pius Mwendwa has been with the Kenya Pipeline Company for over 15 years, rising through the organization’s finance leadership ranks.
He joined KPC around 2010 as Chief Accountant, a position he held until 2015, before progressing into senior management.
Mwendwa rose to become General Manager for Finance, where he has been responsible for shaping the company’s financial and commercial direction.
Mwendwa has managed financial strategy and planning, budgeting, audits, tax compliance, revenue management, and commercial services.
He has also been responsible for overseeing ICT financial systems, petroleum stock accounting for the national pipeline network, internal controls, cash‑flow forecasting, and providing strategic support to the Managing Director and the Board.
The KPC Board mentioned Pius Mwendwa’s deep institutional knowledge, long service, and technical expertise as factors in appointing him as Acting Managing Director.

Before joining KPC, Mwendwa spent more than a decade at Nation Media Group (NMG), one of East Africa’s largest media organizations.
He worked in various finance roles from the late 1990s or early 2000s until about 2010. His career at NMG culminated in the role of Group Management Accountant, having earlier served as a Management Accountant within the Nation Newspapers Division.
Family Life and Public Visibility
Although generally reserved, Pius Mwendwa has occasionally represented KPC at public corporate engagements.
Notably, he spoke at the launch of an ultra-modern LPG truck-loading facility in Mombasa in November 2024, highlighting his involvement in strategic infrastructure projects in the energy sector.
Pius Mwendwa maintains a private personal life and does not publicly disclose details regarding his age, marital status, spouse, children, or extended family.
