Mohammed Umulkher Harun is a Kenyan politician and a nominated Member of Parliament representing youth under the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).
Early life and education
Mohamed Umulkher Harun began her academic journey in Garissa County, completing her primary education at Hulugho Primary School from 2003 to 2010, where she took the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examination.
She proceeded to Alliance Girls High School, one of Kenya’s most prestigious national schools, where she earned her Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) between 2011 and 2014.
Demonstrating a strong aptitude for technology and systems, she later undertook tertiary education at Kenya Methodist University, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Information Systems in 2022.
Career
Professional career
Between 2016 and 2021, she served as the Director of The Kesho Alliance, an NGO focusing on education advocacy and leadership development for young women, particularly in northeastern Kenya.
Her portfolio also includes a stint in communications at the Raila Odinga Secretariat, beginning in 2022.
Her leadership and promise were nationally recognized, including honors such as the Ms. President (2021) title in a leadership reality TV competition and the distinction of Eisenhower Fellow, alongside being affiliated with the Young African Leadership Academy.
Political Career
In August 2022, Umulkher was nominated to Kenya’s National Assembly as an MP representing youth under the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), marking the beginning of her first term in elective politics.
Notably, in March 2024, she sponsored the Sign Language Bill, a forward-thinking piece of legislation aimed at improving accessibility by mandating that state agencies and educational institutions provide assistive devices for the deaf and blind, and establishing a Kenyan Sign Language Council to regulate interpreters.
Advocacy
In May 2025, she called for an immediate investigation and justice following the abduction of Abdirahman Omar Sheikh (Raheye), which she condemned as a grave human rights violation and demanded accountability from security agencies.

Days earlier, she had also raised alarm over an alleged unlawful arrest in Bulla Mzuri, where she condemned the aggressive action by unidentified officers and called for the victim’s release in line with constitutional rights.
Umulkher has also taken leadership in community campaigns against gender-based violence.
She led the Komesha Dhuluma initiative in Garissa, calling for zero tolerance toward rising femicide cases and advocating for rescue centres, counselling services, and justice through formal legal processes, not traditional alternatives.
In parliamentary dynamics, she has been in the news for being the victim of an on-floor altercation.
In March 2025, EALA MP Iman Falhada physically attacked her in Parliament. The incident led to the suspension of Falhada and underscored Umulkher’s resilience under pressure.
In July 2025, Umulkher declared her intention to contest for the Garissa Woman Representative seat in the upcoming elections, pledging to lead with integrity and avoid using the position for financial gain.
