Shakira Wafula is a Kenyan Gen Z activist and fitness coach from Kimilili, Western Kenya. National prominence came during the June 2024 Gen Z protests against the Finance Bill.
Her widespread recognition followed a viral video showing a fearless confrontation with police during the demonstrations.
In a viral video, Shakira Wafula was seen boldly confronting the police, saying, “I am here for my people; I am here for your rights.”
Educational background of Shakira Wafula
Shakira Wafula began her higher education at the University of Nairobi, where she pursued a Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS). The coursework was partially completed, with her last enrolment recorded in October 2018.
She later enrolled at Nairobi Zoezi Institute, where she earned a Diploma in Fitness Science, laying the foundation for her career in fitness and wellness.

Wafula also studied at Maahad Girls’ Training Institute, earning a Certificate in Islamic Studies and Arabic.
Since 2022, Shakira Wafula has been pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Exercise and Fitness Science at Kenyatta University and is expected to complete the program in 2026.
Career Background
Shakira Wafula began her fitness career in September 2020 as a fitness coach at Afrique Gym in Nairobi County, where she provided personalized training and support to clients seeking to improve their fitness and overall performance.
Since 2020, she has also worked as a freelance personal fitness trainer, designing customized workout programs focused on strength, endurance, and general wellness for individual clients.

In 2022, Wafula joined ZED SIX Crosstraining as a fitness coach. Her role involves leading CrossFit training sessions, promoting safe exercise practices, and helping clients achieve fitness goals through structured coaching programs.
Beyond fitness, she has been involved in youth advocacy and community leadership. Since 2024, she has served as Vice Chairperson of Kikao, where she has helped build community partnerships and supported civic engagement initiatives.
In October 2024, Wafula served as a panelist in the African European Network on Development and Sustainability’s “Shaping Futures Academy” program, organized by the Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana), contributing to discussions on civic engagement and development issues.
Previously, Shakira Wafula served as Vice Chairperson of Kikao and as a member of the Political Committee of David Maraga’s Presidential Campaign, resigning in November 2025 over governance concerns.
