Africa International University (originally known as the Nairobi Evangelical Graduate School of Theology – NEGST) is a private institution in Kenya, born from the vision of Byang H. Kato, the first African General Secretary of the Association of Evangelicals in Africa and a vocal critic of syncretism and universalism in the African Church.
NEGST was accredited and officially opened its doors in 1983, admitting its first cohort of just four students. Since then, the university has grown steadily, expanding its physical infrastructure one block at a time. The Faculty and Academic buildings, completed in 2003, are among the most notable additions.
From its humble beginnings, AIU has evolved into a fully chartered university with a student population of 2,685 and an alumni network of 2,956.
The institution boasts a workforce of 126, comprising 51 faculty members, 31 administrative and technical staff, and 46 middle-level clerical personnel.
The chartered Christian university is located in the serene environment of Karen, Nairobi, a strategic location, serene and conducive for learning.
AIU consists of four distinct academic schools, each offering a variety of programs from certificate and diploma courses to bachelor’s and master’s degrees. The schools include:

- School of Business and Economics (SBE)
- School of Education, Arts & Social Sciences (SEAS)
- School of Computing & Emerging Technologies (SCET)

The institution offers a total of 10 undergraduate degree programmes across various fields, with a strong focus on education, communication, business, and technology.
Among the courses offered is the Bachelor of Arts in Communication, Translation and Linguistics, which comes with three concentration options: Descriptive Linguistics, Communications concentration.
These programmes are designed to equip students with skills in multilingual communication and interpretation in diverse contexts.
The university also offers Bachelor of Education degrees in both secondary and primary options, as well as an Early Childhood Development (ECD) option, targeting future educators and curriculum developers.
For students pursuing careers in mental health and community service, AIU provides a Bachelor of Arts in Counselling Psychology.
Business-minded students can choose between the Bachelor of Science in Accounting and Financial Management and the Bachelor of Science in Entrepreneurship, which focus on equipping learners with essential financial and business development skills.
In the tech space, the university offers a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology, preparing graduates for careers in systems development, networking, and IT support.
Lastly, the Bachelor of Arts in Development Studies addresses social transformation and development work, ideal for students interested in non-profit, governmental, and international development sectors.

AIU continues to solidify its position as a centre for advanced scholarship, offering 10 doctoral programmes across theology, education, and psychology.
Among the PhD options available are: Education with specializations in Church Education and Child Development and Family Studies.
There are also doctoral degrees in Theological Studies with concentrations in World Christianity, Theology and Development, Theology and Culture, Systematic Theology, Practical Theology, and Mission Studies.
The university also offers a PhD in Interreligious Studies and another in Clinical Psychology
