Embakasi East Member of Parliament (MP) Babu Owino has weighed in on the decision by former Prime Minister Raila Odinga to leave Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja in-charge of politics in the City County.

During an interview on Wednesday, February 12, Babu said Sakaja has never wished Raila well throughout his political journey.

He narrated how Sakaja campaigned against Raila in the last four elections.

Babu said Sakaja supported late President Mwai Kibaki, former President Uhuru Kenyatta and President William Ruto who were all contesting against Raila.

Sakaja Supporting Raila’s AUC Bid

Additionally, he claimed that Sakaja is supporting Raila’s bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship because Ruto did not front an alternative candidate.

“Sakaja being Baba’s son might not mean well for the same dad. If Baba had a candidate that Ruto is supporting for AUC chairperson, Sakaja would have campaigned for that candidate not Baba because he has never liked Baba,” he said.

He recalled how they were attacked in Soi during the funeral of Mzee Kibor alongside Raila and Suna East MP Junet Mohammed.

“It is only Babu who was abducted for 3 days never to be traced. My wife came out to look for me in the dark. Since when did women go out for war? Nobody was talking about it.

He also mentioned when his election was nullified in 2027, and the case went up to the Supreme Court just because he was supporting Raila.

Relationship with Raila

However, Babu Owino said Raila still remains to be his leader and he his supporting his AUC bid.

He explained that Raila deserves the seat even though some politicians are not supporting him.

“I love Baba, he is my leader, and I have campaigned for him. I am really praying that Baba wins the AU chairperson because he deserves this seat, he has sacrificed a lot. Some people might not agree with him. But as his son I want him to succeed,” he stated.

He noted that his differences with the Sakaja are nothing personal, purely ideological.

The MP stated that he has no problem with anyone who supports Sakaja and says he is happy with the support of God and the people.

 “If Raila endorsed Sakaja, then there’s nothing also wrong with that. Babu Owino has been endorsed by the Almighty God and Kenyans, and you can see by the results (I’m) ranked at the top. However, if a prodigal son comes back home, even if we have a squirrel, we will slaughter it and welcome him back home.”

Babu Owino at Running for President

Babu also hinted at his future political plans, claiming that he is even qualified become president based on his education, political experience and track record.

He singled out 36-year-old Burkina Faso President Ibrahim Traore, who is age mate but ruling the West African country.

“Look at Burkina Faso, the gentleman is 36 years old, he’s already a President. I’m overqualified to be a President of the Republic of Kenya. I have all the instruments necessary. The political acumen is available, the passion and the energy I have, the third thing that I have is the intellect, but the most important thing that I have is the Almighty God,” he said.
