Heavy traffic has been reported along Mombasa Road near Konza after an accident occurred at Kapiti.
The accident occurred at Kapiti near Konza, where the two trailers collided, blocking the highway and disrupting movement in both directions.
In a traffic update issued at 8:06 a.m. on October 2, the Long Distance Drivers and Conductors Association (LODDCA) said traffic had stretched from Malili to Machakos Junction and from Athi River past Machakos Junction along the A109.
The association said the congestion lasted more than eight hours after the previous night’s accident, with overlapping identified as the main cause of the prolonged traffic snarl-up.
“After last night’s accident, traffic has now stretched from Malili to Machakos junction and from Athi River past Machakos junction along A109. Traffic has lasted for more than 8 hrs with overlapping being the main issue,” read part of the update.
Mombasa Hit by Traffic Snarl-Up
The crash blocked both lanes, severely disrupting traffic and leaving motorists stranded along the highway.
The traffic build-up started last night, with motorists reporting minimal movement from around 9:00 p.m.
A video seen by The Kenya Times shows two trailers occupying one side of the road, while other vehicles are packed along the opposite lane, leaving little room for traffic to move.
With vehicles largely at a standstill, some motorists have resorted to driving onto the grassy roadside to bypass the congestion and overtake other vehicles.
Motorists using the Mombasa Road corridor have been advised to expect delays as traffic remains heavy along the affected sections.
Police officers are currently at the scene working to manage traffic and clear the affected section of the road.
