Key Routes and Locations Where Fatal Accidents Happen When Travelling to Mombasa Revealed

The Mombasa-Nairobi Road, Mombasa-Malindi Road and Makupa Causeway have been identified among the key accident hotspots in Mombasa, with the three corridors recording the highest concentrations of fatal crashes.

According to the Mombasa Road Safety Report 2025, the Mombasa-Nairobi Road recorded the highest number of deaths at 65, followed by Mombasa-Malindi Road with 44 deaths and Makupa Causeway with 21 deaths.

“The monthly distribution of road traffic deaths and serious injuries in Mombasa in 2025 showed noticeable variation throughout the year. March and August recorded the highest numbers of serious injuries, with 30 and 29 cases, respectively. November recorded the highest number of fatalities (15 deaths) and also reported 17 serious injuries,” reads part of the report.

Mombasa Road Safety Report Names Accident Hotspots

Likoni-Ukunda Road recorded 16 deaths, while the Portreitz-Airport corridor recorded nine deaths, completing the top five high-risk fatal crash corridors.

When measured by deaths per kilometre, however, Mombasa-Malindi Road had the highest rate at 7.1 deaths per kilometre, followed by Makupa Causeway at 6.6 and Mombasa-Nairobi Road at 4.1.

For pedestrian fatalities and serious injuries, Mombasa-Nairobi Road was the leading hotspot with 64 deaths, followed by Mombasa-Malindi Road with 30, Makupa Causeway with 24, Jomo Kenyatta Avenue with 21 and Portreitz-Airport with 14.

The report also identified hotspots for crashes involving motorcyclists and tricyclists. Likoni-Ukunda Road recorded the highest number of deaths at 41, followed by Mombasa-Nairobi Road with 40 and Mombasa-Malindi Road with 33.

Old Mombasa-Malindi Road recorded 12 deaths, while Magongo Road recorded 10 deaths involving motorcyclists and tricyclists.

Top Five High-Risk Fatal Crash Corridors

Vehicle Types That Cause Accidents

Pedestrians recorded 204 deaths, making them the most affected road user group. Of these fatalities, 77 involved unknown vehicles, while cars, pickups and SUVs were linked to 47 deaths. High goods vehicles were involved in 36 pedestrian deaths, followed by two- and three-wheelers at 23 and buses and minibuses at 21.

Motorcycle and tricycle occupants were the second most affected group, recording 151 deaths during the period. Cars, pickups and SUVs were involved in 38 of these deaths, while two- and three-wheeler collisions accounted for 33 deaths. Another 33 deaths resulted from single-vehicle crashes, while high goods vehicles were involved in 21 and buses and minibuses in 17.

Vehicle occupants recorded 38 deaths, with 13 resulting from single-vehicle crashes. Cars, pickups and SUVs were involved in eight deaths, as were high goods vehicles. Buses and minibuses and two- and three-wheelers were each linked to three deaths, while 3 deaths involved unknown vehicles.

Bicyclists recorded the lowest number of fatalities at 19. Cars, pickups and SUVs were involved in eight of these deaths, while high goods vehicles accounted for five and buses and minibuses for four. Two deaths involved two- and three-wheelers.

“Approximately one in four of these fatalities resulted from collisions with cars, pickups, and SUVs. These findings underscore the need for road safety interventions that prioritize the protection of vulnerable road users,” read part of the report.
