The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has warned motorists of traffic disruption along Mombasa Road following the partial closure of the Eastern Bypass off-ramp at Cabanas on the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA)-bound side.
In a notice issued on September 10, KeNHA said the closure will last 35 days, from Thursday, September 17, to Thursday, October 22, 2026, to allow construction of a box drain along the road section.
“The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) notifies the public that a section of Mombasa Road (A8) at the Cabanas on the Eastern Bypass Off-Ramp on the JKIA-bound will be temporarily closed partially from Thursday, September 17, 2026, to Thursday, October 22, 2026. This closure will allow construction of a box drain on this road section,” read part of the notice.
KeNHA Announces Temporary Closure Of Cabanas Off-Ramp
According to KeNHA, the closure will facilitate the construction of a box drain along the affected road section.
Motorists travelling from the Eastern Bypass towards JKIA will be required to use a designated diversion lane during the construction period.
Traffic marshals will be deployed at the site to direct motorists and help minimize traffic disruption.
KeNHA has advised motorists to follow the temporary traffic management plan and cooperate with police officers and traffic marshals while using the affected route.
Normal traffic operations will resume once the construction works are completed.

Alternative Routes For Motorists
Motorists who wish to avoid the affected ramp may consider the following routes, depending on their starting point and final destination:
- Airport North Road: Motorists from Outering Road, Donholm, Pipeline, Fedha and Embakasi can use Airport North Road to access the airport area, including JKIA. The route is better suited for local traffic heading to the airport and nearby areas.
- Outering Road–Airport North Road: Drivers from Eastlands and areas along Kangundo Road can use Outering Road before connecting to Airport North Road. This option suits motorists heading towards JKIA and Embakasi while avoiding the affected ramp.

- Jogoo Road–Enterprise Road/Likoni Road: Motorists from Eastlands, Donholm, Umoja and areas along Kangundo Road heading towards the Industrial Area, South B or central Nairobi can use Jogoo Road and connect through Enterprise Road or Likoni Road before joining Mombasa Road. Motorists should expect possible congestion, especially during peak hours.
- Southern Bypass–Ole Sereni: Motorists travelling from Westlands, Kikuyu, Karen, Lang’ata, Kiambu or Thika Road can use the Southern Bypass and connect to Mombasa Road at the Ole Sereni interchange.
- Mombasa Road: Motorists already in the CBD, Upper Hill, South B, Industrial Area or along Mombasa Road can use the nearest open junction to access the road instead of travelling through the Eastern Bypass and Cabanas.
