The Boda Boda Safety Association of Kenya (BAK) has distanced itself from ongoing GEN Z led protests, stating that it is ruining businesses for over 2 million of its members.
In a statement, the association has indicated that the protests have been infiltrated by goons with intention of destroying businesses and causing harm.
Consequently, boda boda operators across the country have been hurt and in other cases their motorcycles destroyed during the protests.
Therefore, its members will no longer be leaving their businesses to join protests.

“In as much as we, the Boda Boda sector operators respect article 37 of the constitution that gives our citizenry room to peacefully picket, we highly condemn intrusion of the otherwise peaceful protests by goons masquerading as Gen Z protesters.
“We wish to bring to the attention of protesters and their parents across the country that Boda Boda is an enterprise, and we shall not be forcefully drawn from our economic activities into joining protests and hooliganism,” the statement read in part.

At the same time, the association pointed out that in Mlolongo area, Nairobi, goons attacked operators and burnt down four motorbikes, leading to huge losses.
“Our attention is drawn to a recent incident in Mlolongo where goons posing as protesters resorted to burning down four (4) motorbikes belonging to our members,” explained the statement.
Kevin Mubadi, the chairman of the association warned protestors against stealing motorbikes or destroying them during the protests. Members of the association have said that they will protect their businesses and deal with the goons head on.
“We remain committed to the rule of law and order but will be forced to protect our economic activities and assets where need be across the country.
“This should therefore sound as a warning to the protesters whose aim is to either steal or destroy our motorbikes and injure our members, we shall face you head on,” they warned.

Police IG Warns against Protests
Earlier, acting Inspector General (IG) of Police Douglas Kanja warned the public against planned anti-government protests on Thursday, July 18, 2024, saying that the National Police Service (NPS) has received information that criminal gangs are planning to use the protests to conduct their attacks.
Kanja explained that international security standards require peaceful demonstrators to have a leader who will be in touch with the police.
“In keeping with our Constitutional role and in the interest of national security, we wish to inform the public that we have credible intelligence that organized criminal groups are planning to take advantage of the ongoing protests to execute their attacks including looting,” he said.
