One person has been injured after suspected goons attempted to force their way into St Stephen’s ACK Cathedral in Kisumu during a church service attended by Linda Mwananchi leaders Edwin Sifuna and James Orengo.
Videos seen by The Kenya Times from social media accounts showed several youths armed with rungus and machetes outside the church as they tried to access the venue.
Motorbikes allegedly belonging to the goons were also set to a blaze and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, warned that those who were causing desruption learned their lesson.
Suspected Goons Gather Outside Cathedral as Tension Escalates
According to videos circulating online, groups of young men were seen gathered near St Stephen’s ACK Cathedral as the service attended by the Linda Mwananchi leaders continued inside.

Some of the youths were armed with traditional clubs commonly known as rungus and machetes. The group was reportedly attempting to gain entry into the church compound, prompting security personnel to intervene.
The incident happened as Sifuna and Orengo were attending a Sunday service as part of their Linda Mwananchi activities in Kisumu.
Footage from the scene also showed motorcycles engulfed in flames outside the cathedral, with reports suggesting that some of the motorcycles belonged to individuals involved in the confrontation.
Babu Owino Claims Attackers Were Sent to Disrupt Leaders’ Visit
Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino stated that the youths involved had been sent to attack Sifuna and Orengo.
Owino said the burning of the motorcycles was a consequence of the actions of those who attempted to disrupt the leaders’ activities.
He also stated that they will continue defend themselves if the government fails to protect them from alleged goons.
“Goon-lets who were sent to attack Orengo and Sifuna have learnt their lessons the hard way. This is the consequence of their actions. Their motorbikes have been burnt to ashes. We will continue defending ourselves if the Police can’t defend us. The consequences are better imagined than experienced,” said Babu Owino on Facebook.

Security Response and Rising Political Tensions in Kisumu
Following the tesnsion, Security officers were deployed to manage the situation and prevent further clashes. The police lobbed a tear gas to disperese people.
The incident has renewed concerns over security during political engagements, especially as political activities increase ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The confrontation comes amid heightened political mobilisation across different parts of the country, with leaders holding public meetings and engaging supporters in various counties.
Following the confrontation, one person was reportedly injured.
