Former KICC board chairperson Irungu Nyakera has revealed the funders behind the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) movement led by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
In a statement on Thursday, May 7, Nyakera dismissed claims that he was solely financing the party’s operations in the Lavington office.
The former PS stated that the party, launched in May last year, is funded by contributions from members and supporters.
“DCP is not funded by one individual. Like every serious political movement, it survives through the efforts of many people internally and friends who believe in the cause,” he said.
“Everyone contributes in their own way, and no single person can claim ownership of the party or its activities.”
At the same time, Nyakera denied social media claims that he had fallen out with the former Deputy President, Rigathi Gachagua.
Nyakera described the reports as attempts to create confusion and weaken the opposition.

He maintained that he still considers Gachagua his political mentor and supports the former deputy president’s ‘Wantam’ campaign message.

Nyakera also clarified that he never left the Farmers Party, explaining that he only stepped down as party leader after joining the government.
This, according to him, was in line with regulations barring chairpersons of state boards from holding political party positions.
He added that his role in DCP was limited to serving as Nairobi patron due to his gubernatorial ambitions in the capital.
“I never left Farmers Party. I only stepped down as Party Leader when I joined government, in line with government circulars that bar chairpersons of state boards from holding political party positions. My role in DCP was only as Patron for Nairobi because of my gubernatorial ambitions for Nairobi,” Nyakera said.

The development comes after Nyakera, in a media interview in June last year, revealed that he had joined DCP, describing it as a strategic move to focus on Nairobi County politics.
“In Nairobi, I believe that the party I can work with is the DCP. This is because it is a truthful party. Right now, we want the truth in Kenya—and in Nairobi. We also want development for Nairobians,” Nyakera stated.
In December 2025, Nyakera announced his political ambitions ahead of the 2027 General Election, confirming that he would seek the DCP ticket for the Nairobi governorship.
“I also reaffirm my intention to seek the Nairobi Governor seat in 2027 under the DCP banner. I will pursue the party ticket with focus, discipline, and respect for the party’s democratic processes,” he said.
