Former President Barack Obama’s long-delayed presidential center officially opens this week with a star-studded ceremony on Thursday, June 18, 2026, followed by public events throughout the Juneteenth weekend.
The 19-acre campus on Chicago’s South Side marks a departure from traditional presidential libraries by placing greater emphasis on community spaces, education, and civic engagement rather than only preserving presidential records.
The invitation-only grand opening ceremony begins at noon ET on Thursday and will be livestreamed.
Organizers have assembled a major entertainment lineup featuring Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Wonder, Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Hudson, John Legend, Common, Eddie Vedder, Marc Anthony, Tems, The Roots, and U2’s Bono and The Edge. Actress Marsai Martin is also scheduled to appear.
Public access to the center begins Friday, June 19, with free programming continuing through June 21 as part of the Juneteenth weekend celebrations.
Center Focuses on Community Rather Than Traditional Presidential Library Model
The Obama Presidential Center includes a museum highlighting Obama’s presidency and themes of civic participation, as well as a new Chicago Public Library branch, playground, sledding hill, athletic center, restaurant, café, and gathering spaces.

Unlike traditional presidential libraries operated by the National Archives, the project was privately funded at an estimated cost of $850 million. The Obama Foundation designed the center around ongoing community use, leadership development, and public engagement rather than primarily serving as a repository for documents and historical materials.
The museum exhibits are expected to cover major moments from Obama’s administration, including the 2008 financial crisis response, the Affordable Care Act, and key foreign policy decisions.
Trump Criticizes Project as Obama Foundation Welcomes Visit
President Donald Trump has repeatedly criticized the project, recently describing the center as a “total disaster” in social media posts. The comments continue the long-running political rivalry between the two presidents, which has remained a defining feature of their public relationship.
Despite the criticism, the Obama Foundation has extended an invitation for Trump, along with others, to visit and tour the facility at any time. No official response from the Trump White House regarding a possible visit has been reported.

The foundation said the opening represents a celebration of the values that shaped Obama’s presidency and the ability of communities to create change.
Political Divide and Competing Public Images
The launch of the Obama Presidential Center comes as Obama continues to maintain strong support among entertainment figures and cultural leaders more than a decade after leaving the White House in 2017.
The project has faced delays, rising costs, and local debates over its location in Jackson Park and its impact on surrounding communities. Supporters argue it will bring investment, jobs, and resources to Chicago’s South Side, while critics have questioned the cost and the departure from the traditional presidential library format.
The contrast has also extended to Trump’s own public events, including a UFC-themed gathering on the White House South Lawn featuring performers such as Kid Rock and the Zac Brown Band.
