Top officials at the National Police Service (NPS) have contradicted President William Ruto over the whereabouts of police officer Benedict Kabiru, who went missing in Haiti.
According to KTN, police bosses said Kabiru is alive, dismissing claims he was killed in Haiti.
However, the family lawyer, Mbuthi Gathenji, has accused the authorities of suggesting that President Ruto lied.
Kabiru has been missing for the past six months since his disappearance in March 2025.
The President confirmed that the officer died in Haiti during a High-Level Meeting on Haiti at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
Ruto said the officer died despite earlier statements by government officials, including the Inspector General Douglas Kanja, that he was still alive.
He mentioned Benedict as one of the three Kenyan police officers who have been killed in the Mission.
I must use this occasion to honor the Kenyan officers Mr. Samuel Tuoi, Benedict Kabiru, and Kennedy Nzuve, who lost their lives in the line of duty.
Kabiru went missing after Kenyan police officers were ambushed by a gang in Haiti.
Family Decry Confusion
The family said Ruto’s pronouncement was both shocking and deeply confusing.
Kabiru’s mother, Jacinta Wanjiku, said she believed the assurances from government officials that her son went missing, but an operation was underway to find him.
Wanjiku said it is unfair to learn about her son’s death from social media.

She also accused President Ruto of announcing while he was outside the country, despite all the efforts by the family to find the truth.
“The President’s confession has shattered us. Why do I have to learn of my son’s death through social media, and from a speech abroad? Since May, we have knocked on doors seeking answers in vain. What exactly are they not telling us?” she asked.

Plea to the Government
Wanjiku accused the government of torturing the family, adding that officials have known the truth all this time.
She said President Ruto must confirm such reports before making them public.
However, Wanjiku asked the government to repatriate Benedict’s remains so that they can confirm he is dead.
“Why are they torturing me? They have tortured me all that long, knowing the truth because I know the President cannot say something that has not been confirmed,” said Jecinta.
“I want to urge them to bring the remains of my son so that I can do what is necessary because I can’t believe it until I see his body that he is no more,” Kabiru’s mother added.
