The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Renson Ingonga has been unanimously elected as the President of the Africa Prosecutors’ Association (APA).
Ingonga was elected during the Association’s 17th Annual Conference and General Meeting held in Marrakech, Morocco, on Wednesday, July 10, 2024.
Celebrating the feat, the office of the DPP said that the election was historic and a huge milestone for Kenya and Africa.
The DPP will be addressing challenges faced by prosecutors while promoting justice among other matters about prosecution across Africa
“This historic election marks a significant milestone for Kenya and the entire African continent.
“It underscores our commitment to active participation in international communities and addresses the challenges faced by prosecutors while promoting justice, enhancing cooperation, and upholding the highest standards of prosecutorial practice across Africa,” the statement read in part.
In his acceptance speech, the DPP expressed gratitude and a steadfast commitment to advancing the APA’s goals.
“I am humbled and excited not only about this role, but also the responsibility that comes with it. Prosecutors have a significant role in the dispensation of justice, and we are joining hands on the continent to ensure this is discharged in a fair, ethical, clear and firm manner,” said the DPP.

DPP Speech After Appointment
In his acceptance speech, the DPP expressed his gratitude and commitment to advancing the goals of the association.
Furthermore, the statement indicated that the DPP succeeds Egyptian Prosecutor General Hon. Counsellor Mohamed Shawqi Ayyad as the APA President. His immediate responsibilities include presiding over all association meetings and the Executive Committee.

The APA, established in 2003, brings together prosecutors from diverse African countries. Its mission is to enhance cooperation, collaboration, and capacity building in the field of criminal justice.

Governor Wins International Award
Earlier on June 28, Lamu County Governor Issa Timamy won the International Averted Disaster Award 2024 by the World Bank Hub in recognition of the Lamu County Emergency Operation Center.
Moreover, a press release from the World Bank hub indicated that the emergency center was recognized for its exemplary locally led initiatives.
Additionally, the awarding organization highlighted the crucial connection between risk information and responsive action.
The 2024 Averted Disaster Award winners were announced at the Understanding Risk Global Forum 2024, held in Himeji, Japan on June 19, 2024.
