The Ministry of Interior and National Administration, on May 25, has declared Wednesday, May 27, as a public holiday.
According to the Cabinet Secretary for the Interior and National Administration, Kipchumba Murkomen, the public holiday on May 27 will mark the Eid-ul-Adha holiday in accordance with the Public Holidays Act.
“It is notified for the general information of the public that, in exercise of the powers conferred by section 3(1) of the Public Holidays Act, the Cabinet Secretary for the Interior and National Administration declares that, Wednesday, May 27, 2026, shall be a public holiday to mark Eid-ul-Adha,” the Kenya Gazette notice read.
Eid-ul-Adha Holiday Celebrations
Eid-ul-Adha is a religious holiday observed by the Muslim community, marking the sacrifice made by Prophet Ibrahim, who was willing to offer his son.
The holiday, also known as the Festival of Sacrifice, is celebrated on the 10th day of Dhu al-Hijjah, the final month of the Islamic lunar calendar.

In 2026, the holiday will be celebrated from May 26 to May 27, following the sighting of the moon in various Muslim regions.
In addition, the Muslim community marks the celebration with prayers, family reunions, and the performance of acts of charity to those around them in the community.
Muslims follow the Islamic calendar with the Eid-ul-Adha celebration being linked to the Day of Araf and the annual Hajj pilgrimage.
During the celebration, an animal sacrifice is offered by the Muslims, who have the ability, and family members, as well as the neighbors, share the meat among themselves in a festival known as Qurbani.

Embassy Closure During Eid-ul-Adha Holiday
As the Muslim holiday is set to start the celebration on May 27, the Embassy of Kenya in Kuwait will remain closed during the holiday period and resume operations on June 2.
According to the notice the by the Embassy of Kenya in Kuwait, the operations in the Embassy will be temporarily halted during the Eid-ul-Adha holiday as well as the Madaraka celebration on June 1.
“The Embassy wishes to inform members of the public that the Embassy will remain closed during the Eid Al-Adha holidays, from Tuesday, 26 May 2026 to Sunday, 31 May 2026, and Madaraka Day on 1 June 2026. Normal operations and consular services will resume on Tuesday, 2 June 2026,” Embassy of Kenya in Kuwait noted.
Further, the Kenya Embassy’s operations in Washington, Berlin, Seoul, Riyadh, and Ottawa will also be on hold to mark the holiday.
In addition to the Missions being closed, the Kenya High Commission in Canberra will also be closed in observance of the Eid-ul-Adha resuming normal operations on May 28.
