The ongoing construction of the modern market in Embu County is transforming the lives of many young people by creating employment, internship opportunities, and technical exposure for the youth.
Speaking at the project site in Shauri area, Embu Town, interns and workers praised the initiative for giving unemployed youth a chance to gain experience and earn a living.
Embu resident Maureen Nkatha, who is currently serving as an intern at the project, described the internship as a life-changing opportunity for many young people.
“I believe this is a great opportunity, not just for me, but also for fellow interns and the youth because it has created job opportunities. In the next year or so, it is going to expose us to many things including career dynamics and technical experience,” she said.
Nkatha noted that many graduates who had completed their courses but remained jobless are now gaining practical experience through the government’s paid internship program.

“Most of us were out there jobless, but currently we are gaining good experience in the workforce technically and professionally. We are grateful to His Excellency President William Ruto and Deputy President Kithure Kindiki for the opportunity,” she added.
Another resident, John Muriuki from Kavita in Embu, said the market project has provided employment to many local youth who previously struggled with unemployment.
“I work here as a casual labourer on a daily basis. Since this project started, many youths have been employed here. It has really helped those who were unemployed,” he said.
Muriuki observed that the project has not only improved livelihoods but also reduced crime and drug abuse among the youth by keeping them productively engaged.
“Initially many young people were idle despite having educational qualifications. Because of unemployment, some ended up engaging in criminal activities. But now many have jobs and are focused on building their future,” he explained.
He added that the project has united youth from different towns who are now working together peacefully at the construction site.
“Youth from Embu and other towns are working here together. We have made friends and become united despite coming from different places,” he said.

The workers further urged the government to continue implementing development projects that create employment opportunities for young people across the country.
According to the workers, the initiative has helped many youth become self-reliant, support their families, and avoid engaging in political violence, crime, and substance abuse.
“We advise fellow youth that crime does not pay. They should work hard and avoid shortcuts because hard work eventually pays off,” Muriuki said.
The Embu Modern Market project is among several government infrastructure and affordable housing initiatives aimed at improving urban development while creating jobs and empowering young people through skills development and practical training opportunities.
