The President of Institution of Engineers of Kenya (IEK) Eng. Shammah Kiteme, has called out Kapseret Member of Parliament (MP) Oscar Sudi for using the initial Eng.
Kiteme, who is a consulting civil structural engineer said the title is reserved for specific people under the Engineers Act 2011.
He asked Sudi to stop misusing the title since he has not earned it.
Kiteme stated that it takes at least eight years of learning to qualify for it.
“Please note the initial Eng. before anyone’s name is protected by law; Engineers Act 2011. It takes at least 8 years of hard work to earn it. Sudi, please stop this disrespectful use of the title you haven’t earned,” Kiteme said.
Engineers Act 2011
The Engineers Act of 2011 governs the use of the title “Engineer” and its abbreviation “Eng.”
According to Section 47(2) of the Act, individuals who are not registered or licensed under this law are prohibited from using the title “Engineer” or “Eng.” before their names.
This measure is intended to prevent impersonation and ensure that only qualified professionals represent themselves as engineers.
The Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK) has previously warned Kenyans against using the initials.

Sudi Receives Honorary Degree
Sudi who is popularly known as Engineer was awarded with an honorary doctorate degree in Leadership Administration and Management from Northwestern Christian University.
The MP received the degree during an event held at Eldoret Polytechnic on December 21, 2204.
“This recognition reinforces my belief that true leadership is about serving others and driving positive change,” Sudi wrote on X.

What is an Honorary Degree?
The University of Nairobi (UoN) defines an honorary degree as an academic degree for which a university or a degree-awarding institution has waived the usual requirements like sitting examinations.
It is a doctorate, awarded to individuals who have no prior connection with the institution in question.
The degree is usually conferred as a way of honoring a distinguished person’s contributions to a specific field, or to society in general for ‘the sake of honor.
“Honorary degrees are usually awarded at regular graduation ceremonies, at which the recipients are invited to make an acceptance speech before the assembled faculty and graduates – an event which forms the highlight of the graduation ceremony,” reads UoN’s description.
Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters means Honorary Degree conferred for general, non- discipline-related areas, such as peace and gender, among others.
