Seasoned journalist and former Citizen TV news anchor, Franklin Wambugu, has been appointed the Director of Public Communication at the office of Deputy President Professor Kithure Kindiki.
In a statement dated Friday, January 24, 2025, Wambugu shared the news of his new role, expressing excitement about his appointment.
“I’m happy to share that I’m starting a new position as Director of Public Communication at the Office of the Deputy President of the Republic of Kenya!” the statement read.
Before his appointment, Wambugu served as the Chief Officer for Communication and Public Relations in the County Government of Kiambu from July 2020 to January 2023.
Franklin Wambugu media career
With over 20 years of experience in the media industry, Wambugu has had a distinguished career in journalism.
He joined Royal Media Services (RMS) in February 2004 and worked there until February 2013, during which he held various roles including news editor, news anchor, and producer at Citizen TV.
His time at Citizen TV was instrumental in revamping the station, contributing to its rise to the top position in Kenya’s television market by viewership and revenue, with a market share of 52%, up from single digits.
Citizen Nipashe, the 7 p.m. news bulletin, became the most-watched program in Kenya during his tenure.

After his nine-year stint at RMS, Wambugu moved to Media Max Limited as a news anchor and Managing Editor in February 2013, working there until October 2019.
At Media Max, Wambugu played a key role in the relaunch of K24 Television in 2013, boosting its market share from 2% to double digits in less than five years, making it the fastest-growing television station in Kenya.
He also helped revamp K24’s Kiswahili content, with the K24 Saa Moja and Wikendi bulletins becoming the country’s most in-depth and comprehensive Kiswahili news programs.
Wambugu’s education background
After nearly seven years at K24, Wambugu transitioned to a role in communications and public relations, joining the Kiambu County Government as the Chief Officer for Communication and Public Relations.

Wambugu holds a Bachelor’s degree in Arts, Journalism, and Related Programs, as well as a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Suffolk.
