Former Citizen TV news reporter and Switch TV editor Mohamed Mahmud has landed a new role at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation for the Federal Republic of Somalia. Mohamed Mahmud shared the news in a statement on Wednesday, October 16, where he expressed his pleasure on his appointment.
“I’m happy to share that I’m starting a new position as Director of Communications at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Somalia,” the journalist revealed.
Following the announcement, the news was well-received, with his colleagues in the media industry congratulating him on the new role.

British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) World Service Africa Regional Editor, Richard Kagoe, expressed confidence that Mahmud will excel in his new position.
“Congratulations, Mo! I’m sure you will excel in this role and bring much-needed value to the MFA, drawing from your wealth of experience and networks. Hongera, Kaka!” Kagoe said.
Former BBC journalist and former KTN News investigative Journalist Hussein Mohammed also congratulated him.

In this role, Mahmud will lead a media team responsible for managing Somalia’s diplomatic communications and international image, promoting the country’s foreign policy, and fostering relationships with global partners.
His work will ensure Somalia’s voice is effectively represented on the international stage.
Mohamed has an extensive background as a broadcast journalist, entrepreneur, and strategic communications consultant.
In addition to his extensive experience in international media and strategic communications, Mohamed’s dual citizenship in Kenya and Somalia enhances his diplomatic role, reflecting his deep connections to both countries and ability to navigate complex diplomatic environments on behalf of the Somali government.
Work experience
He has previously worked with several international media organizations such as Turkish Radio and Television Corporation (TRT)World, Voice of America (VOA), Press TV Iran, and TVC News Nigeria.
Mahmud began his career working with the Vice President’s Press Service under then Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka. He then later transitioned to the Prime Minister’s office under Raila Odinga.
Mohamed then joined Citizen TV as a TV producer, contributing to the popular show “Tahidi High.” In 2012, he became a Senior TV Investigative Journalist at Kenya Television Network (KTN), covering major news in Africa, such as terrorism events in Somalia, Nigeria, and Kenya.
As a freelance journalist, Mohamed contributed to international outlets like TRT World, BBC, VOA, Press TV Iran, and TVC News Nigeria, covering significant events, including the Westgate Mall attack in Kenya and the capture of Barawe by AMISOM.

He has also managed editorial teams, led news bulletins, and produced documentaries.
In Somalia, Mohamed led the digital strategy for HornConnect, a company that produced news for major international broadcasters.
He played a significant role in managing the media campaign for the current President of Somalia, His Excellency Dr. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.
Mohamed is also recognized as a Digital Brand Visibility Expert and a Documentary Producer.
Through these roles, he developed his expertise in broadcast journalism, strategic communications, and media production, including creating compelling narratives and managing high-level diplomatic campaigns.

Education Background
Mahmud holds a Bachelor of Applied Science degree in Applied Communication from Multimedia University, where he studied from 2019 to 2021.
He also holds a Diploma in Television Production, Mass Communication, and Media Studies from the same university, where he studied from 2007 to 2011.
