Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on September 9 urged leaders calling for his impeachment to respect the will of the people.
While speaking at a church service at the Methodist Church in Meru County, Gachagua urged those leaders not to fall into the temptation of overturning the will of the people.
“The will of the people is supreme. Elections were held, and the president and I were elected on a joint ticket for five years. That is the will of the people,” Gachagua said.
Gachagua further stated that overturning the will of the people through other means would not sit well with the electorate.

It is alleged that the second-in-command had a closed-door meeting with the president, during which Gachagua banged the table in protest after President Ruto refused to heed his demand for an exit package of Ksh8 billion, following political differences between them.
According to NTV, one of the members of parliament in support of Gachagua’s impeachment motion highlighted ten reasons as to why the second in command should be impeached.
Grounds for Gachagua’s impeachment
It is alleged that Gachagua arrived at the Ksh8 billion amount by multiplying each vote for Ruto in Mount Kenya with Ksh 4000. According to the member of parliament, such action seemed like threatening the President.
Accumulating more wealth is another reason why MPs want to impeach Gachagua. It is said that within 2 years Gachagua has accumulated wealth amounting to Ksh 5.7 billion, yet he earns Ksh 12 million each year.
Gachagua is also accused of allegedly diverting materials meant to construct the Malindi to Kilifi Highway to the construction of a road in Kilifi leading to a hotel linked to him.
