Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has fired at President William Ruto as the impending impeachment motion against him gains momentum.
Gachagua while speaking in Mwea, Kirinyaga County on September 28, 2024, where he is on a tour of the Mount Kenya region went bare knuckle on President Ruto daring the Head of State to declare if he was no longer interested in the votes from the region.
The DP in the fiery speech claimed that Ruto was elected by people from the Mt. Kenya region only because he had him as his running mate.
“I was chosen by Kenyans, not the President. The President and I were chosen on one ticket, and you chose President Ruto because Rigathi Gachagua was on the ballot, if Rigathi Gachagua was not there you could have not chosen him, Isn’t that true?” Gachagua said.
“If President Ruto is tired of Mt Kenya people he should tell us. We elected him for free, we loved him and made him the President, he must stop telling MPs to impeach me.”
Further, the DP sent a warning to Mwea Member of Parliament (MP) Mary Maingi asking her to first consult with her constituents before supporting his impeachment.

Gachagua has maintained that he will not be cowed by the impeachment motion.
“They wanted to threaten me and push me to resign. Will you accept? Kenyans are the ones who gave me the job, if there’s anyone feeling that I have not done right, they must accuse me to Kenyans,” he added.
Gachagua hits at MPs
The DP has called on MPs to drop his impending impeachment motion and allow him to work with the President Ruto.
Gachagua further lashed out at the MPs pushing for his impeachment accusing them of being used to destroy the current administration.
While addressing the residents, he affirmed that he is in government to stay and should be given space to deliver on the mandate given to him and the President.

Looming impeachment
As of Thursday, September 26, evening, 242 Members of Parliament had signed the motion, exceeding the 117 needed to push it forward.
Some of Gachagua’s alleged crimes that have rattled the legislators include his controversial statement on the shareholding in the Kenya Kwanza government.
Also, the DP has been accused of playing divisive politics by pushing the interests of Mount Kenya region at the expense of other regions.
Reports further indicate that the motion could be brought to the National Assembly Speaker, Moses Wetangula, as early as next week.
