Supporters of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua overpowered police in Nyeri on Wednesday, November 4, as his allies addressed a roadside rally.

The police attempted to disperse the crowd that had gathered for the rally, which followed Gachagua’s allies accompanying Kiambu Senator Karungo Thang’wa to honor a summons by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) regional offices in Nyeri.

Detectives issued the summons in connection with investigations into chaos that erupted during a burial in Bibirioni, Kiambu County.

However, hell broke loose when the police tried to disperse the crowd. Fearing for their lives, the officers retreated and scampered for safety as the crowd charged against them.

Kiambu Senator was in the company of leaders who included, Githunguri Member of Parliament (MP), Gathoni Wamuchomba, Murang’a Senator Joe Nyutu, former Limuru MP, Peter Mwathi who was abducted by police, Nyandarua Senator John Methu, Lawyers Ndegwa Njiru and Makueni Senator Dan Maanzo.

Thang’wa and several allies of Gachagua arrived early at the DCI office, where he was questioned for about five hours regarding the incident.

The DCI officers in Nyeri informed the Kiambu Senator and former Limuru MP, who was allegedly abducted on a day of chaos in Limuru, that they must appear before the DCI headquarters on Kiambu Road on Thursday, November 5, for further questioning.

“This is part of the intimidation aimed at preventing us from serving our people. I come from Kiambu, and we are in Nyeri. We don’t understand why they summoned us here, only to tell us that we have to return to Nairobi,” Thang’wa stated.

For his part, Mwathi expressed uncertainty about the reason for his summons. “I have received a summons to appear without fail tomorrow at 8:00 a.m. at DCI Nairobi to answer charges of which I am unaware,” Mwathi said.

Leaders who accompanied the Kiambu Senator criticized the government for allegedly using the police to settle political scores.

They stated that the current political troubles of Thang’wa are a result of his steadfast support for Gachagua and opposing the Government.

It is time for us to speak because if we don’t talk things will turn out worse,” Wamuchomba stated.

Her sentiments were echoed by Nyandarua Senator and Murang’a Senator who emphasized that the country will head into the wrong direction if such acts continue to be perpetuated by the state.

The summons came after the former Deputy President was attacked by goons during a funeral in Limuru. Gachagua, who was scheduled to speak at the funeral, revealed that security agents in unmarked vehicles had been following him.

He further stated that the occupants of these vehicles were monitoring his visitors and trailing him as he left his home, including during his travels to his rural home in Nyeri.

Gachagua claimed that the attack was well-orchestrated by the State. He alleged that his life was being targeted and further claimed that the State was acting in such a manner due to his strong influence in the Mount Kenya region.

Thang’wa and Mwathi are set to appear at the DCI Headquarters along Kiambu road on Thursday, December 5.
