The Cabinet Secretary (CS) for Labour and Social Protection, Dr. Alfred Mutua, on Sunday, October 22, promised 5,000 more jobs abroad after the government kicked off recruitment of 3,000 Kenyans to work in Qatar.
In a statement, Mutua assured Kenyans that the 5,000 jobs would be offered in the coming weeks, with ongoing efforts to secure more employment opportunities abroad.
“Kenyans want a hand up, not a handout. “We are committed to pushing for more job openings internationally and exploring ways to decentralize the hiring process to make it accessible across Kenya,” Mutua stated.
The Qatar job interviews, which started on Friday, October 25 at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) and then later proceeded to Kabete National Polytechnic on Sunday, October 27, attracted nearly 20,000 hopefuls for only 3,000 available positions.
Mutua noted 80% of Kenyans failed interview in technical skills
Initially set to conclude on Sunday, October 27, the government extended the interviews to Monday, October 28 to accommodate additional applicants for technical roles.
The Labour CS emphasized that the future of Kenyan youth lies in high-quality technical training. He noted that there was an alarmingly high failure rate in practical assessments, with nearly 80 percent of candidates unable to meet the requirements in technical areas upon his visit to the Kabete National Polytechnic where thousands of graduates gathered there for various interviews.

“During my visit to Kabete National Polytechnic, I noted a high failure rate in practical assessments, with 80% of candidates struggling in technical skills like plumbing, masonry, and electrical work.
I stressed that these fields hold significant demand, and only proper training can prepare our youth for future success locally and abroad, “Mutua noted.

With long queues and the predominantly practical nature of the assessments, Dr. Mutua urged applicants to remain patient, explaining that the process may take time.
Kenyans’ safety in Qatar
He also reminded candidates of the importance of adhering to interview protocols. “Merit is what matters,” he stated, citing an incident where a candidate was turned away due to non-compliance with grooming standards required for a waiter position.
At the same time Mutua outlined the benefits that successful applicants will receive while in Qatar. These include a tax-free salary, accommodation, transportation, and meals during work hours.

Additionally, the applicants will receive medical coverage and holiday breaks.
Mutua also reassured Kenyans about their safety amidst the rising number of mysterious deaths involving Kenyans living in the Middle East.
“Do not be afraid to work in the Middle East. I have worked there myself before. Just focus on the job that brought you there,” the Labour CS stated.
