The Council of Legal Education (CLE) has listed universities licensed to offer Master of Laws, Bachelor of Law, and Diploma in Law programme.
In an announcement on January 16, CLE CEO Jennifer Gitiri said the statistics are based on the institutional licensing status as of December 31, 2023.

“Under the provisions of Sections 2,8 (1) (b),18,19,20,21,22,23 and 48 of the Legal Education Act No.27 of 2012, the following are the only licensed legal education providers and legal education programmes in Kenya as indicated respectively in each cluster” read part of the announcement.
There are four universities licensed to offer Master of Laws, 17 licensed to offer Bachelor of Laws and 4 licensed to offer Diploma in Law Programme.

Universities Licensed to Offer Masters in Law
Among the institutions approved to offer master’s in law is the Strathmore Law School and Mount Kenya University School of Law.
The licenses of the two institutions are valid until November 19, 2024, and March 23,2026 respectively.

Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) School of Law and Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA) Faculty of Law both have licenses valid until June 20, 2028.
Campuses Allowed to Offer Degree
Daystar University, University of Nairobi (UON) Faculty of Law Kisumu Campus and Mount Kenya University all have licenses to offer degree in law which was valid until July 31, 2023.
“The institutions applied for renewal on July 3,2023 and April 5, 2023, respectively. The Council inspected the institution in October 2023 pending determination,” read part of the announcement.
The Council explained that Daystar and Mount Kenya have applied for renewal of license, but UON Kisumu Campus has not.
Kisii University and University of Embu have licenses valid April 16, 2024, to offer bachelors.

Additionally, Umma University has a license valid until September 24, 2025, to offer degree in law and sharia.
Africa Nazarene University, Chuka University, Moi University and UON Parklands Campus have licenses valid until December 10, 2025.
Egerton and Kabaraka University also have licenses valid June 16, 2026.
Four Universities including Maseno, Strathmore, Southeastern University of Kenya and CUEA also have licenses expiring on November 29, 2027.
JKUAT has the longest license running up to June 20, 2028.

Diploma Programmes
CUEA and Mount Kenya are also registered to offer diploma in law programme.
Mount Kenya has applied for renewal of its licenses which expired on November 6, 2023 while that of CUEA is valid until November 29,2027.
Kisii University and Kenya Institute of Management are also registered to offer diplomas with licenses valid until April 16 and November 19, 2024, respectively.
Other Pending Applications
Kenya School of Law has a pending application to offer diploma in law, para legal studies.
“The institution was inspected by Council on November 1, 2023. Pending determination by the Councill,” read the notice.
Kenyatta University and Riara University have also applied for renewal of license to offer Bachelor of Law.
