Deputy Chief of Staff in charge of Performance and Delivery Management Eliud Owalo has outlined key government projects lined up for implementation in the Nyanza region.
These projects, according to the former CS, aim to revitalize the region and boost economic growth through strategic investments and infrastructure development.

Among these initiatives is the Lake Region Ring Road, a significant infrastructure project designed to connect Busia to the Kenya-Tanzania border, unlocking new opportunities for trade and commerce in the region.
According to Owalo, the road will not only enhance transportation within Nyanza but also facilitate easier cross-border trade with neighbouring countries, helping to integrate the region into broader regional economies.

This key infrastructure project is expected to accelerate the free flow of goods and services across five counties while providing vital connectivity to the national road network, thereby spurring economic growth in the region.
The road begins in Busia County, near the border with Uganda, and traverses through Siaya, Kisumu, and Homa Bay before concluding at Muhuru Bay in Migori County.

Another significant project in the pipeline is the Koru-Soin Dam, designed to mitigate flooding in Nyando while providing essential irrigation during dry spells to boost food production in the region.
This dam is expected to enhance last-mile water connectivity and improve power generation through the Sondu Miriu electricity project, contributing to the overall development and sustainability of the area.

Also on the list is the Magwagwa Multipurpose Dam, a 120 MW hydro power project planned on the Sondu River basin in Nyamira, Kenya.
The Magwagwa Dam is expected to provide water for a 13,000-hectare irrigation scheme and generate 115 megawatts of electricity.
The project, which is part of the national development plan, Vision 2030, will be spread across Kisumu, Kericho, Nyamira, Homa Bay, Bomet, and Vihiga counties.
The government is also focused on revitalizing key industries in the region, such as fish processing along Lake Victoria, sugar production, cotton farming, and mining in areas like Migori and Asembo.
There are also plans for a potato processing plant in Kuria and a soapstone factory in Kisii, both of which will create new employment opportunities and help develop local industries.
At the same time, Owalo highlighted that the government will expand electricity access across areas in the Nyanza region.
