A total of 5,000 Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) recruits have completed their basic military training at the Defense Forces Recruit Training School (DFRTS) in Eldoret.
The recruitment process is designed to provide opportunities across Kenya, with the law requiring the Defense Council to advertise the number of recruitment opportunities allocated to each county before an exercise begins.
5,000 Recruits Complete Military Training
The latest cohort underwent intensive military training at the Defense Forces Recruit Training School in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County.
DFRTS provides foundational military training to newly recruited personnel. In the 2025 recruitment exercise, successful General Duty recruits, Tradesmen, and Tradeswomen were directed to report to the school in Eldoret for basic military training.

Training includes military discipline, physical conditioning, field craft, leadership development, and other core soldiering skills. Recruits also undergo document verification, medical screening, and biometric registration before beginning their formal training.
The recruits eventually join different branches of the Kenya Defense Forces, including the Kenya Army, Kenya Air Force and Kenya Navy, depending on the category and selection process.
How KDF Distributes Recruitment Opportunities
KDF recruitment is conducted nationally, with the Ministry of Defense establishing recruitment centers in different parts of the country.
Kenya Defense Forces Act provides a specific legal framework for county allocation. Section 28 requires the Defense Council to advertise the “chances allocated per county” at least 30 days before recruitment.
The recruitment criteria must also comply with the Constitution and the Kenya Defense Forces Act.
This means recruitment is not simply based on a fixed percentage for broad regions such as Central Kenya, Western Kenya, Rift Valley or Coast. Instead, the official framework allows allocation at the county level.
In 2021, KDF said its nationwide field recruitment drive would take place in 327 gazetted sub-counties across all 47 counties.
The 2025 recruitment advertisement similarly listed recruitment centers across counties, including Kiambu, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Nyandarua, Nyeri, Embu and Meru, alongside counties from other parts of the country.
Regional Balance and Selection of Candidates
Although recruitment opportunities are allocated at the county level, KDF also emphasizes national representation.

During the 2025 recruitment exercise, the Ministry of Defense said the Constitution requires national security organs to recruit from across Kenya to ensure regional balance. The Ministry also said it was streamlining the recruitment process to promote inclusivity and reduce potential bias in selection.
Defense Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya similarly said the recruitment exercise would follow the Constitution and guarantee fairness, inclusivity and representation from all 47 counties.
However, being from a particular county or attending a recruitment center does not automatically guarantee selection.
Candidates must meet the prescribed requirements and pass the relevant screening and assessment stages.
KDF has also introduced digital systems into recruitment to improve data management and reduce human interference.
In 2025, senior military officials said digital data management would allow recruitment progress to be recorded in real time and help promote fairness across recruitment stations.
The recruitment process therefore combines county-level allocation, nationwide coverage, regional representation and individual merit, with successful candidates proceeding to military training before joining the Defense Forces.
