Kenya’s Chief of the Defence Forces (CDF) General Charles Kahariri has given an update on the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) peacekeeping mission in South Sudan.
General Kahariri hosted the Chairperson of the Ceasefire & Transitional Security Arrangements Monitoring & Verification Mechanism (CTSAMVM), Major General Teshome Anagaw, at the Defence Headquarters, Nairobi, on August 5, 2025.
Their discussions were centered on key priorities for CTSAMVM operations to ensure that the mechanism remains effectively engaged and continues to build on the progress achieved in the peace process.
Kenya plays a pivotal role in fostering dialogue, regional cooperation, and lasting peace in South Sudan as a key guarantor of the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan (R-ARCSS).
General Kahariri reaffirmed Kenya’s steadfast support for CTSAMVM’s mission and the broader objectives of R-ARCSS.
He emphasized the importance of stability in South Sudan to the security of the region and reiterated Kenya’s readiness to continue providing personnel, expertise, and logistical support.
“Peace in South Sudan is not just a regional imperative—it is a moral responsibility for the security and prosperity of our region. CTSAMVM’s role is critical in ensuring that all parties uphold the ceasefire and move towards lasting peace. Kenya remains committed to this mission and to the broader commitment to IGAD and regional peace efforts,” said the CDF.

R-ARCSS & Tumaini Initiative
R-ARCSS was signed in September 2018 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to end the civil war that began in 2013 between forces loyal to President Salva Kiir and former Vice President Riek Machar.
The Agreement ushered in a ‘transitional period’ that would lead to elections in 2024, but this has been extended to 2026.
President William Ruto leads the Tumaini Initiative, which was launched in May 2024 to complement the R‑ARCSS process.
