The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) has distanced itself from recruitment notices circulating widely on social media, warning that no recruitment exercise is currently underway and urging the public to disregard information from unofficial sources.
KDF issued the clarification after a series of purported Ministry of Defence and Kenya Gazette notices surfaced online claiming recruitment for the 2026/2027 financial year had commenced.
The notices, which advertised vacancies for General Service Officer cadets, specialist officers, tradesmen and general duty recruits, were later flagged as fake.
Based on the documents shared online, some appeared to have been altered from previous recruitment advertisements and recirculated as current notices.
In a statement posted on its official platforms on October 19, KDF said the advertisements were not genuine and reiterated that it announces any recruitment exercise only through recognised mainstream media outlets, the official Ministry of Defence website, and verified KDF communication channels.
“KDF warns the public against fake recruitment adverts circulating online. No recruitment is ongoing. Official vacancies are announced through mainstream media, the MOD website and official KDF social media platforms. Disregard recruitment information from unofficial sources,” the military said.
A Recurring Problem
The latest clarification highlights a long-standing challenge facing the military, which has repeatedly been forced to counter fake recruitment advertisements and impersonation schemes targeting job seekers.

In November 2022, the Ministry of Defence issued a public alert after a fraudulent KDF recruitment advertisement began circulating on social media, warning members of the public that the recruitment notice was fake.
The ministry advised prospective applicants to rely only on official communication channels for information regarding military recruitment.
The issue has persisted despite repeated warnings, with fraudsters increasingly exploiting public demand for employment opportunities in the disciplined services.
Authorities have in recent years uncovered several cases in which suspects allegedly used promises of KDF jobs to defraud unsuspecting Kenyans.
In July 2026, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations announced the arrest of Derrick Fanuel Oduor, who was accused of orchestrating an employment scam that allegedly fleeced job seekers of more than Ksh8.6 million through false promises of securing positions in the Kenya Defence Forces, National Police Service and Public Service Commission.
Detectives said victims lost a total of Ksh8,621,141 in the scheme.
Earlier, in February 2026, detectives arrested a police recruit constable accused of conning a member of the public out of Ksh687,000 by falsely promising to secure an official KDF employment letter.
Investigators said the victim paid the money believing the recruitment offer was genuine before the suspect allegedly cut off communication and failed to provide the promised job.
KDF has consistently maintained that recruitment into the military is free of charge and that no individual can influence the outcome of the process in exchange for payment.
