The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced a temporary traffic disruption at along Uhuru Highway for 35 days.
In a notice on January 13, KeNHA said the highway will be close at Haile Selassie Roundabout on Uhuru Highway (A8) Road.
The Authority said the traffic disruption is due to scheduled road works for construction of a pedestrian underpass at the section which will commence from Thursday January 16, 2025, to Thursday February 20, 2025.
“KeNHA would like to inform the public of a temporary traffic disruption at Haile Selassie Roundabout on Uhuru Highway (A8) Road,” the Authority said.
Additionally, the Authority provided alternative routes that motorists can follow during this time.
“KeNHA has advised motorists to follow the proposed traffic management plan below and cooperate with the police and traffic marshalls on site,” reads another part of the notice.
KENHA Greenpark Terminus Pedestrian Underpass Network
In August 2024, KENHA announced plans to construct a Greenpark Terminus Pedestrian Underpass Network along the Uhuru Highway-Haile Selassie intersection roundabout.
KeNHA Deputy Director Infrastructure Jared Makori said Authority was to spend Ksh 2,017,116,059 to address the pedestrian traffic conflict and time delays along the highway.
Further, Makori said the project is funded by the government through the Road Maintenance Levy Fund.
He emphasized that the underpass would enhance safety for all road users and provide a safe environment for business activities.
“We expect the 32% completion of underpass works to enhance economic sector performance and social service delivery in Nairobi’s Central Business District,” he said.

He stated that over 21,000 pedestrians use the Uhuru Highway-Haile Selassie intersection roundabout daily, with 8,500 pedestrians crossing during peak hours.
Additionally, he explained that the highway will have four underpasses with a total length of 176 meters without stairs.
Underpass 1 will span Haile Selassie Avenue, while underpass 2 will span Uhuru Highway on the Mombasa-bound side. Both underpasses will be 106 meters long.
Underpass 3, located across Haile Selassie Avenue on the Upperhill side, will measure 29.6 meters, while underpass 4, located across Uhuru Highway on the Westlands-bound side, will be 40.4 meters long.

Recent Closures
KENHA has been undertaking repairs on various roads across Nairobi.
On January 5, the Authority reopened the Nairobi Southern Bypass from Ole Sereni Interchange to Ngong Road Interchange after a temporary closure for essential bridge and pavement repairs.
Besides, KeNHA had closed Kipande Road from Friday, December 27, 2024, to Tuesday, December 31, 2024, to facilitate the installation of a cross culvert aimed at enhancing road connectivity.
