The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has announced that several regions across the country will continue to experience rainfall starting Friday, April 18, 2025, with some areas expected to receive heavy downpours. In its latest five-day weather forecast covering the period from Friday to Tuesday, April 22, Kenya Met indicated that rainfall is expected to persist in various parts of the country, including the capital, Nairobi, and its environs.
According to the weatherman, some areas within the Nairobi Metropolis may experience heavy (above 20mm) to very heavy (above 50mm) rainfall within 24 hours.
Isolated thunderstorms are also expected, particularly during the afternoon, evening, and early morning hours.
“Expect moderate rainfall across several areas with potential localized flooding,” said Kenya Met.
Isolated heavy rainfall events are expected over parts of the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the South-Eastern Lowlands, the Coast, as well as North-Western and North-Eastern Kenya.
Detailed Kenya Met forecast
In the Highlands East of the Rift Valley—including Nairobi—temperatures will range between a minimum of 10°C and a maximum of 25°C.
This region covers the counties of Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, and Tharaka Nithi.
According to the Kenya Meteorological Department, some areas within this region are likely to experience cloudy mornings with chances of light rainfall over a few areas, which will break into sunny intervals.

These conditions are expected to alternate with afternoon showers and thunderstorms, with some places receiving night-time rainfall throughout the forecast period.
Meanwhile, the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and the Rift Valley region are also expected to receive continued heavy rainfall.
Counties in this region include Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot.
Afternoon showers and thunderstorms are likely to occur in several areas throughout the forecast period, with rainy conditions expected in many places during the mornings. Some areas will also experience night-time showers across the period.
The average minimum night-time temperature is expected to drop to as low as 13°C, while daytime temperatures may rise to around 27°C.
Other regions
In the Coastal counties—Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale—as well as coastal parts of Tana River, residents should expect morning, afternoon, and night showers in a few areas throughout the period.

The average maximum daytime temperature in these regions is expected to reach 33°C, while the minimum night-time temperature will dip to 25°C.
In the South-Eastern Lowlands—including Machakos, Kitui, Makueni, Kajiado, and Taita-Taveta counties, along with the inland parts of Tana River—minimum temperatures are expected to be around 15°C, with highs of up to 33°C.
According to Kenya Met, showers and thunderstorms are expected in a few places during the afternoons.
Some areas within this region may also experience cloudy mornings with chances of light rain in isolated areas, followed by sunny intervals. Night-time showers are expected in some locations.
Meanwhile, in the North-Eastern counties of Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo, afternoon and night-time showers and thunderstorms are expected in a few areas.
Morning rains are also anticipated in several locations. The weatherman has warned that maximum daytime temperatures in these regions will exceed 36°C.
Parts of North-Western Kenya—particularly Turkana and Samburu counties—will also experience showers and thunderstorms in isolated areas during the afternoons and nights.
