A fire incident occurred at Moi Girls High School in Kibra Constituency, Nairobi County, on Monday evening, January 20, 2025.
The Kenya Red Cross confirmed the incident at around 7:47 pm, stating that the response team had been dispatched to the scene.
Though the cause of the fire remains unknown, witnesses said the blaze reportedly started in a multi-storey building at the institution.
In an update, Kenya Red Cross said the County fire brigade contained the situation which affected one dormitory adding that there were no casualties.
In a subsequent statement at 11.01 PM, the Agency said the fire had been contained and all students safely evacuated from the building.
Kenya Red Cross also committed to donating beddings and deploy its counseling team to offer Psychosocial Support Services to the affected
“The Nairobi City County fire brigade has contained the situation. One dormitory (capacity unconfirmed) was affected, with no casualties reported. The Kenya Red Cross is on-site assessing the impact and providing psychosocial support services to those affected,” the Agency said.
“The situation has been contained, and all students are accounted for. Kenya Red Cross will provide 200 mattresses, 400 blankets and 200 dignity kits tonight,” Kenya Red Cross said.
Moi Girls Fire Incidents
The incident comes just weeks after schools reopened for the 2025 academic year.
Moi Girls High School has a history of fire incidents, with one of the most recent ones being a tragic dormitory fire in 2017 that claimed the lives of 10 students.

Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris has voiced deep concern and sorrow over the recent wave of school fires, following the latest incident at Moi Girls High School in Kibra.
“Deeply saddened and concerned by the recent fires in our schools, latest on the list today being Moi Girls High School in Kibra. My prayers are with the students, staff and parents during this difficult time. I commend the brave efforts of the Nairobi city fire brigade to contain the blaze and Kenya Red Cross,” Passaris said.

UoN Fire
This follows a fire incident at University of Nairobi’s (UoN) main campus on the night of January 16, 2025.
Acting Deputy Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof Francis Mulaa said the fire broke out at the Taifa Hall causing huge damage to the building.
He revealed that the fire started in the kitchen of a restaurant within the structure before it spread out to other areas.
