The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) has denied a Kenyan airline an operational license for 13 routes from and to the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).
In a notice, the authority detailed that the move was necessitated after the airline, Reliance Air Charters Limited, submitted an application for air service licensing.
Consequently, Reliance Air Charters Limited has no authority to operate on the 13 JKIA routes, including to Johannesburg through Mombasa and back.
“Notice is given that the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority has made decisions on applications for air service licenses whose particulars were previously published in the Kenya Gazette Notice,” the notice read in part.

Other Routes Where it Cannot Operate
At the same time, KCAA detailed that Reliance Air Charters Limited cannot operate on the JKIA – Mogadishu – JKIA, route.
Other routes on the list include JKIA – Juba– JKIA, JKIA – Moroni – JKIA, JKIA – Mombasa– Moroni–Mombasa– JKIA, JKIA – Dar-es-Saalam – JKIA, JKIA – Entebbe – JKIA routes.
In addition, the airline is not permitted to operate the JKIA – Goma – JKIA, JKIA – Lubumbashi – JKIA, JKIA – Kinshasa– JKIA, JKIA–Mogadishu–Jeddah–Mogadishu – JKIA, JKIA – Kigali– JKIA, JKIA – Bujumbura – JKIA.
“License not granted for the air service listed under International scheduled air service for passengers on the routes.” the notice added.

Routes the Airline is Authorized to Operate in
On the other hand, the airline has been authorized to operate other International non-scheduled air services for passengers and cargo to or from points in Africa and the rest of the world.
The authority has granted it a one-year license from August 12, 2024, to also operate domestic scheduled air service for passengers.
Moreover, the notice detailed that the domestic flights are for specific routes including JKIA/Wilson-Kitale-JKIA/ Wilson, JKIA/Wilson-Lodwar-JKIA/Wilson.
Additionally, it can operate within JKIA/Wilson – Eldoret-JKIA/Wilson, JKIA/Wilson-Kakuma-JKIA/Wilson, JKIA/Wilson-Kisumu-JKIA/Wilson, JKIA/Wilson-Wajir-JKIA/ Wilson routes.
“Domestic non-scheduled air service for passengers, cargo, and mail within Kenya, International non-scheduled air ambulance service to/from points in Africa and the rest of the world,
“Domestic non-scheduled air ambulance service within Kenya using aircraft types E120, CRJ9, and DHC8 based at J.K.LA and Wilson Airport,” explained the authority.
