The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) has invited sealed tenders for leasing of space for the Development and Management of a Tanzanite and Tsavorite Jewlery Store.
According to the tender documents, the store will be established at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).
The announcement made on August 6, has caused uproar from Kenyans online who have questioned the legitimacy of the business.
Further, the move comes while the authority is under public scrutiny over a controversial modernization project involving Adani Airports Holdings Limited.
The Authority highlighted the government’s reliance on Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) to drive infrastructure projects without burdening the national budget, while responding to the matter.
However, some Kenyans have read foul play in the new jewelry store project.

Arguments Made Causing Uproar Over the KAA Tender
Some Kenyans have noted that Tanzanite is a mineral mined predominantly from the Tsavo National Park.
Therefore, Kenyans have questioned the intention of the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), which denied reports of active mining activities taking place in the national park.
“A leaked document has found its way to the internet showing KAA having a store at JKIA to store Tanzanite and Tsavorite jewelry at JKIA. Tsavorite and Tanzanite minerals are allegedly mined at Tsavo National Park!!!” the Kenyan Vigilante stated on X.
