The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has been issued with new demands following its clarification of information circulating on social media about alleged mining activities in the Tsavo East National Park, Taita Taveta County.
KWS had in a statement dated Tuesday August 12, dismissed images circulating on social media, asserting that no mining activities have been carried out in the park.
The wildlife service further explained that the images shared on social media are from the Galana Kulalu Food Security Project, located on Galana Ranch, which is adjacent to Tsavo East National Park.
However, in a letter dated August 13, Public Policies’ organization Mizani 254 requested KWS for more information and a release of both older and updated imagery of Tsavo East National Park and surrounding areas.
Mizani 254 highlighted Article 6.6 of the Access to Information Act saying that it emphasizes fostering informed discussions on public interest matters.
Further, the Public Policies’ organization noted that the ongoing debate about alleged mining activities, regardless of their veracity, remains a public concern.
KWS Issued with Fresh Demands
“We refer to your press release dated 12th August 2024 on the KWS X handle and appreciate your efforts to address concerns about alleged mining activities in Tsavo East National Park.”
“However, pressing concerns remain that need clarification for transparency, accountability, and informed public discourse,” read part of the statement.
“Under Article 4 of the Access to Information Act, we request the release of both older and updated imagery of Tsavo East National Park and surrounding areas.”

According to Mizani 254, the imagery is crucial for the public to independently verify claims and ensure accurate information is disseminated, aligning with your commitment to conservation.
Providing the requested images and addressing the issue transparently will enhance public understanding and engagement.
“Additionally, Article 232 of the Constitution of Kenya mandates promoting accountability and transparency, along with providing timely and accurate information to the public. Given this constitutional obligation, it is essential for KWS to facilitate access to the requested information,” added Mizani.
The organization has maintained that the request is made in good faith to foster an environment where the public can engage in well- informed discussions based on accurate and up-to-date information.

KWS Clarifies Alleged Mining in Tsavo East Park
These demands were made after KWS earlier in a statement dismissed images circulating on social media, asserting that no mining activities have been carried out in the park.
KWS explained that the images shared on social media are from the Galana Kulalu Food Security Project, managed by the Agricultural Development Corporation (ADC) and located on Galana Ranch adjacent to Tsavo East National Park.
The wildlife service further emphasized that the images depict the construction of canals to facilitate water flow for irrigation farms, not mining activities as claimed on social media.
KWS reaffirmed its commitment to conserving and protecting all national parks and wildlife heritage.
The new demands issued following the clarification come as miners and traders pressure Mining and Blue Economy CS Hassan Ali Joho to disclose the findings of a multibillion-shilling geophysical survey on Kenya’s mineral deposits.
