The first Kenyan-registered aircraft operated and owned by a Kenyan to land on Australian soil was an Astral Aviation freighter, which touched down in Brisbane, Australia, on May 27, 2025, arriving from Hong Kong.

This event is noted as a historic milestone, with records of a Kenyan-owned and operated aircraft landing in Australia.

Astral Aviation, a Nairobi-based cargo airline, operates a fleet including Boeing 747s and 767s, and this flight marked a significant achievement in Kenyan aviation history, enabling it to serve over 50 destinations.

Kenyan-owned aircraft have increased over time, with ownership evolving from mainly government and agricultural use in the early years to include more private individuals, businesses, and charter companies due to economic growth, tourism, and expanded regional connectivity.

However, in a significant milestone, on May 27, 2025, an Astral Aviation freighter became the first Kenyan-registered and Kenyan-operated aircraft to land on Australian soil, arriving in Brisbane from Hong Kong.

This event underscores Kenya’s expanding presence in global air cargo logistics and highlights Astral Aviation’s role in connecting African markets with the world.

Astral Achievements for over 25 years of operation

Notably, Astral Aviation has been recognised multiple times as the African Carrier of the Year by Stat Times, reflecting its excellence in air cargo services.

It has achieved remarkable success by being recognized as the African All-Cargo Carrier of the Year for eleven consecutive years, expanding its fleet with the historic registration of Kenya’s first Boeing 767-300 freighter, establishing a vast cargo network that spans over 50 destinations across Africa, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.

Therefore forging partnerships with major global carriers such as Emirates SkyCargo, Cargolux, and FedEx, and playing a pivotal role in humanitarian relief and conservation efforts by delivering emergency medical supplies, supporting vaccine distribution, and transporting the remains of Sudan, the last male Northern White Rhino, to raise awareness about endangered species, all while celebrating 25 years of innovation, resilience, and leadership in the African aviation industry.

Interline Partners with Astral Aviation

Further, Astral Aviation operates a combination of scheduled and ad hoc charters along with value-added leasing services. It interlines agreements with over 60 Interline Partners, along with agreements with the leading global and local freight forwarders, and partnerships with over 25 global GSAs, facilitating the consolidation of cargoes at the freighter-friendly Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Dubai, Johannesburg, and Liege Airport.

Establishment of Astral Aviation in Kenya

Astral Aviation, established in 2000 and commencing operations in 2001, is a prominent Kenyan cargo airline headquartered at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi.

However, the airline operates scheduled and charter cargo services across Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and Europe, including destinations like London and Liège.

Additionally, Astral Aviation is a licensed cargo airline that acquired its Air Operators Certificate (AoC) and Air Service License (ASL) from the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority in 2001 and was subsequently designated as a cargo airline by the Ministry of Transport of the Republic of Kenya in November 2006.
